"A TRADITION OF SERVICE"
News Release
July 5th, 2025

  • DEPARTMENTAL REALIGNMENT: RENO AND WALTER STEP INTO NEW LEADERSHIP ROLES
  • Blaine County: On Saturday, July 5th, the Sheriff's Department experienced a leadership transition, welcoming a new Assistant Sheriff to the ranks while another moved into a new area of expertise.

Newly promoted Assistant Sheriff Wiley Reno previously served as Area Commander of Administrative Operations, where he played a key role in shaping the Field, Advanced, and Supervisor Training Division, as well as the Recruitment and Employment Division since mid-June 2024.

On July 1st, retired Assistant Sheriff Jon McCornish officially submitted his resignation from the Sheriff's Department, stepping down from his position within Countywide Operations. In his absence, Assistant Sheriff Ian Walter has transitioned into the role.

Both Assistant Sheriff Wiley Reno and Assistant Sheriff Ian Walter have stepped out of their comfort zones and are now embracing new challenges. We look forward to seeing where their leadership and dedication will take the department and their careers.

The Administrative Operations Bureau has no in-depth mission statement that I can refer to for all of you, but in my view, the mission of Administrative Operations is to make every deputy the best that they can be, so that every deputy may reach their full potential.

When it comes to Administrative Operations, the task of making every deputy the best they can be does not lie with any one man. The task that I give to the capable personnel assigned to command my divisions is to build a culture around all staff that we keep this standard of the best that we can achieve not only to ourselves, but to everyone in the department, especially those that we train. At the end of the day, this is a department-wide team effort, and I hope that we can all continue to reinforce in each other the culture of being the best that we can be.

Furthermore, I encourage all deputies to take that step in furthering this culture. Take out that trainee, pick up that application, help out with the academy, give feedback to your lower-ranking deputies, and you can be sure that you, too, will be the best that you can be.

I’d like to thank Sheriff Walter for his tremendous support not only as my Bureau Director, but as my friend. As well, this thanks goes to everyone who helped me be my best self in this department, a goal that I will strive to achieve for the rest of my time in the department, and I hope the rest of my life.

Special thanks to Sheriff Kirk, and Undersheriffs Wallace and Payne for their vote of confidence.
Lastly, I want to thank all of you for the support you give every day to keep the department turning. No matter what, you are all a part of this effort whether you want to be or not.

    Thank you all.

Please join me in extending a massive congratulations to Wiley Reno on his promotion to Assistant Sheriff! He's stepping into the very large shoes I literally just warmed up for him, and I couldn't be prouder to see him take the reins.

Choosing Wiley as my Bureau Commander when I first became Assistant Sheriff was one of the easiest decisions I've made. While it's tough to leave Administrative Operations—a bureau that's been a cornerstone of my career—I depart knowing it's in an incredibly capable place under his leadership. We're both embarking on new adventures, and I have every confidence in Wiley's success in this new role.

On a more personal note, Wiley is truly unforgettable. I’ve watched him ascend from Academy 41, which I had the pleasure of indirectly overseeing, as a head academy instructor (although I could not personally attend his academy), through his field training program, supervisor training, now all the way to Assistant Sheriff. He's earned a reputation, and perhaps even a badge of honor, for his "thorough" explanations. As his application handler so presciently noted: "Wiley answered very well, keeping his answers not exactly brief but were descriptive." Some things, it seems, never change!

Seriously though, and with all due respect to his current spiritual pursuits (though I remain optimistic about him eventually seeing the light outside of the Mormon Church), congratulations, Wiley! It's been an honor to work with you, and I am genuinely proud.
