- Why would you like to lead the Public Relations for the San Andreas Judicial Branch? (Minimum of 125 words)
- I do say that Justice has always interested me. I don't speak of the metaphorical find that people attempt to uphold and fight for, but instead the actual Justice System. Day in and out, men and women represent their side of justice. As unsexy as this sounds, it is, without a shadow of a doubt, integral to our society and our values as human beings. I think it's that distinct trait that attracts me more than anything, it really is unsexy. How can something that is so important to our continued existence, is also in a way so unattractive? People think of law and are instantly met with thoughts of text books, old white men, long-drawn cases and high fees from blood sucking lawyers. Instead, they should be thinking about the good it can do for society, the benefits it provides, how every day the average citizen is helped just by the mere continued existence of a branch that dedicates its time to uphold justice.
I was a marketing executive, once upon a time, before I decided to have an early requirement, moved here, and did some odd freelance jobs. I would say that marketing curiosity is what attracted me to this position. I always watched the courtroom dramas, seen the true-crime stories, and took a few night courses on the law, but I have never truly appreciated how my skills could be used to help justice. Law has an image problem. No two ways about it. Pair this with the undisputable fact that a Public Relations position is not too dissimilar to a Marketing position (we are just changing what the 'product' we are gaining sport for). It's when it hit me that I would be perfect to help your organization in your quest to find a new Public Relations Director. I have a whole host of skills that are easily transferable (I won't spoil them here since we have a question on that coming up) and I think I'm uniquely suited to give some 'out of the box' thoughts on how the Judicial Branch of San Andreas can change its image, provide some fantastic interactive sessions with the public, and overall take its forward facing facets to whole new levels.
Outside of my past experience, I am suited to leading the Judicial Branch as a person. I like to think of myself as a people person who can be exactly what any situation needs, when it needs it. I thrive on talking to people and relating to them, as well as spreading what I believe in, and I can definitely say without a doubt that I believe in Justice. I have no doubt as well other candidates will match these traits, but my 64 years on this earth has given me experience that few others can rival. I was 3 years old when Kennedy was killed, and I was 8 years old when the good Dr King Jr was killed (may god rest his soul). The biggest issue these two individuals had was that they weren't able to yet hire me to help with their image problem that resulted in their demise. I could sell snow to the Inuit. My abilities, paired with my keen interest in the Judicial Branch, really makes me the whole package for the position and I know deep down in my heart I can help the fantastic hard workers at JB.
- I guess, I did reveal my secret above in that I actually have a background in Marketing. I stand by my belief that Marketing is not dissimilar to Public Relations. I still fully expect to be putting out written copy, hosting activities, and liaising with external partners and stakeholders. I will obviously be switching out product launches, and daytime advertisements for informational pieces of copy that highlight the services of the Judicial Branch, and the people who work there.
I am really interested in the change in dynamic in who I will be targeting. I am used to seeing consumers, but I think it will be great to have a target audience of citizens and interact with them in different ways which promote transparency, clear communication, and informative information exchange.
I love the thought of leading a team and juggling different aspects that promote the Judicial Branch. Since my retirement, I had as many chances to be part of a team and work cooperatively, so I am looking forward to that on a base level. I also haven't had the chance to lead a small group of people through various goals, which I always found distinctly rewarding. There is nothing like sitting down as a team, and thinking about what needs to be done, and then formulating a plan to get there. I have no doubt this is integral to any position in Public Relations, and I think that's something that deeply attracts me to the branch, to the department, and to the position.
- I have a litany of public speaking and personality skills. I think I can be plopped in the middle of any public relations situation and be the one who defuses the situation, and helps bring a sense of compromise to it. My previous position has made me lead product launches, and press release and I think I am well versed in providing written copy which I have stated before. I like to take my time and approach a subject that not many people know about, and then use that as an entry point to peak people's interests and get them more excited about the whole (JB).
I hope to display some of my key skills in the section below, but I think it's important to call out what skills I don't have, just yet. I would love to work on my Video editing skills and refine it at my time in the Public Relations Department. I think it's probably important for the Branch to focus on external contractors for these, to help bolster relations with them and be seen as supporting local business. Yet, I am absolute wanting to dip my toes in and achieve an almost personal goal here, whilst also using that experience I get in the Judicial Branch.
I feel in my 64 years on this earth I have managed to place a few surprises and tools under my belt, and can still hold my own against these young ones. I understand people of all ages and types, having a colourful upbringing myself in a rough and ready neighbourhood. I can use this view on the world to help bring some fantastic and transparent take away for citizens in regard to our Judicial branch.
- I led a small group of middle management in my final years of working at Sprunk. I like to think, in turn, my guidance trickled down to each of the teams that worked under them. Of course, over my time at Sprunk I worked my way up, so I was once one of those humble floor workers and I absolutely have never lost those roots. I kept that understanding of what each position needs to be successful, and I think that's something that's directly transferable everywhere. I can't wait to be able to take that understanding with me to the Judicial Branch, and hopefully lead a small team in developing some really fantastic insights, copy, and events for the citizens to see. I hope to in turn take that experience and find my footing in the Judicial Branch overall, and help us all work as a collective to improve ourselves.
- Video Creation - [Inexperienced]
I would adore the ability to work on this more. I think it would be a great skill and would definetly help us out, but I would still want to rely on already established relationships since I think they could do a much better job, whilst also having the benifit of us improving relations and supporitng business.
Writing large pieces - [Professional]
I am sure you can tell by my application, I am no stranger to writing large pieces and breaking it down into a single narrative. I have had a look through the previous Newsletters and find this would be a format I am very comfortable with as it's much similar to product launch specifications. What I do feel is missing is some single narrative longer pieces that focus on niche areas of the Judicial Branch that I think could really highlight some lesser known aspects of the Branch.
LifeInvader - [Moderate]
I won't lie, I haven't used Life Invader until today, but I have used other social media platforms before, and I am familiar with their working. I oversaw several social media marketing campaigns in my time at Sprunk and I think I would say I am fairly confident at what people use social media for, but I wont lie, I am no expert.

Public Speaking - [Skilled]
Once again, speaking is something I am fairly comfortable with. I think I get on great in small social situations, and I am happy to address a group or even larger. I think I can really sing with medium-sized groups and maybe would even love to see some more interactive situations where the judicial branch reaches out to the citizens and hosts some sort of 'sermon'
I would love to help demonstrate these skills to everyone in the Judicial Branch, and I think the opportunity of Director of Public Relations is the best position for my to demonstrate it, and I think I would be a valuable asset to the branch.
- The very main thing I like to think I would be doing in the first 30 days is observation. I cannot possibly start changing anything that I have no knowledge about, so in those first 30 days I am going to be soaking up as much of the culture and processes as I can. I want to be able to live, breath, and replicate the Judicial Branch as much as I can because I think that's going to help me immensely.
I want to familiarize myself with my co-workers and my team. Coming in at such a position can be sensitive, so I want to ease myself in and really know what everyone's place is and how I can help be part of that forward propelling machine.
When I start to get more comfortable with processes and people, I want to then slowly look at the things directly related to PR and take the state of that. What works and what doesn't? What have we tried, and what have we not? I want to really know this so we can use past experience to be the building foundation upon which we continue to improve. Parts of this will come naturally because within the first month I will be helping organize and produce the monthly newsletter and I can use this as a leaping point to get my hands in all the proverbial pies.
It is only towards the very end of my first 30 days that I even want to begin to think about what may need changed and in what direction. Knowledge is absolutely key to everything we do, and this is no different. I hope to slowly introduce positive change and start planning more public facing activities, as well as bolstering our partnerships with different departments.
- I think I am a pretty calm and boring person. Not many skeletons in my closet.
