"A TRADITION OF SERVICE"

Sheriff Bobby Kirk

MESSAGE FROM THE SHERIFF
  • Image
    Sheriff Bobby Kirk
We are officially stepping into the summer months, leaving a long winter and spring behind us, but we are also entering a month of celebrations, acceptance, and equality. June is especially important for us because it is a month of recognition, a month of support, and a month where our department can show that we stand united in our commitment to diversity and inclusivity. I would love nothing more than to see our ranks filled with greater diversity, as it strengthens our bond with the community and helps us evolve our department in the best possible way.

I also wish to give remarks to Assistant Sheriff Robert Jeys, who, after several years of service, decided to submit his resignation last month. He has been a pillar of our Administrative Operations ever since he transferred from the Los Santos Police Department in May 2020. Jeys was always dedicated to improving our procedures and protocols, holding them dearly, and always acting with the best intentions for the department. As a person, Jeys may have come across as strict to some, but he was a caring and professional individual, one whom I will always consider a friend. I hope to see him return to the department in the future.

Next month, July, the department will celebrate its 5-year anniversary. This will be marked with a special event, including releases highlighting our history and both past and current staff. Time flies by, and although I wasn't here for the creation of the department, I am thankful for the people who have helped build this department and pushed it to today's standards. There's much more to be done, as our field of work is ever-changing, but I am confident in my current roster of enthusiastic and dedicated personnel.

As we step into summer, it is important to be prepared for the coming heat, weather, and influx of tourists coming to San Andreas. Be cautious with alcoholic beverages, and focus on staying hydrated and well-fed. Summer is a prime time for pick-pocketing as the streets fill with more people and unfamiliar faces visiting the state. Keep yourself safe, and if you see something, say something!

I end this message by wishing you all the best start to the summer, as well as a Happy Pride Month!

DEPUTY OF THE MONTH

  • Deputy Sheriff III Gavin Sands
    Image
As you might remember, Deputy Sands was featured in the April 2024 Newsletter, but under the Deputy Spotlight, where he spoke about his current progress and future dreams within the Los Santos Sheriff's Department. During the month of May 2024, Sands really stepped up, impressing the leadership team with his accomplishments and effort.

During this timeframe, Sands received a promotion to Deputy Sheriff III, allowing him to successfully apply for the Special Enforcement Details and is currently a member of the division, training to better protect and serve. Alongside that, he has also received internal certifications operating a new range of vehicles to better support field units during different situations.

We are proud to appoint Deputy Gavin Sands the Deputy of the Month for May 2024 and if you see him on shift, make sure to give him a pat on the back for a job well done!

DIVISION SPOTLIGHT
  • Highway Enforcement Division

The LSSD is charged with the great responsibility of creating a safer state for San Andreas residents to live, work, and play. A major part of this undertaking is ensuring that residents in transit can get to where they need without fear of being hurt along the way. The LSSD Highway Enforcement Division (HED) is at the core of this mission, working tirelessly to monitor activity on county roads and highways and intervene in dangerous activity on the roads before it’s too late.

Led by Sergeants Christopher Porter and Leif Helgarson, HED employs advanced equipment, vehicles, and next-generation law enforcement techniques, coupled with highly trained deputies to carry out both large and small-scale safety operations across the county. You may have come across their DUI checkpoints from time to time or seen their deputies in high-speed pursuits. Beyond this, the HED also embeds itself in day-to-day patrol operations, working alongside Patrol Operations to keep our roads safe 24/7.

The Sheriff's Information Division caught up with HED's Command Officer, Sergeant Christopher Porter, here's what they had to say:
    Sergeant Christopher Porter wrote:
How did your journey start with the Highway Enforcement Division?
My journey started when the division first began in July of 2020, and over time, through a lot of hard work and dedication, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity of working my way up through the division to become the Commanding Officer, where I am today.

What are your goals for the Highway Enforcement Division moving forward?
Right now, our focus is on expanding the frequency of operations, concentrating on commercial vehicle enforcement, drivers under the influence, and collaborating with other divisions such as K-9 in our efforts. Day to day, we’re looking at increased enforcement through additional HED units on patrol and establishing other mechanisms for enforcement.

Is there anything you’d like the public to know?
I think a common misconception is that while HED focuses on traffic enforcement, HED is simply an additional assignment, and deputies are still fully able to perform the duties of any other deputy. That said, part of HED’s duty is to prevent accidents and deter reckless behavior, which means we’re going to be stricter in terms of tickets and demerits, but all those can easily be prevented by slowing down and looking out for your fellow drivers on the road.

I’d also like to use this as an opportunity to reach out to members in our department interested in getting involved in HED to apply today or reach out to me if they have any questions or would like to see how the division operates.
Members of the public interested in joining the Sheriff's Department and potentially joining the Highway Enforcement Division should check out the recruitment desk for employment opportunities here.

DEPUTY SPOTLIGHT

  • Deputy Sheriff II Dymond Cole
Deputy Dymond Cole transferred to the Los Santos Sheriff's Department from the Los Santos Police Department on the 25th of March 2024. Since she joined the department, she has become active in divisions such as the Highway Enforcement Division, Field Training Division and is also currently a Crime Scene Investigator under the Sheriff's Investigation Bureau. We are happy to have the chance to highlight Deputy Cole for her hard work and dedication, giving her a well deserved Deputy Spotlight appointment for May 2024.

When did you join the Los Santos County Sheriff's Department?
I joined the Los Santos Sheriff's Department on the 25th of March, 2024.

What is your favorite thing about being a deputy at the LSSD?
My favorite thing about being a deputy with LSSD is the sense of community within the department. LSSD knows how to make anyone, new recruit, or transfers feel welcome and part of the "family" so to speak.

What is your most memorable moment while serving as a deputy for the LSSD?
My most memorable moment within LSSD so far has to be commander Carlile's arrest of E. M. To me it showed that while we have a job to do we are still human like everyone else. I also am a person who just enjoys a good laugh and that was pretty funny.

Why did you become a deputy for the LSSD?
While working with LSPD, I just found myself enjoying the company of LSSD officers I'd link up with from time to time and eventually decided to go for a change of scenery

What is the greatest feeling about being a deputy?
Slight repeat from above but, I enjoy being part of a welcoming department. I feel like when you become a part of LSSD, you are welcomed with open arms and some good banter to make you feel just like "one of the boys." As cliche as it sounds, I also just like helping people, whether its my trainee colleagues, or civilians.

Where do you see yourself in the LSSD two months from now?
I would love to see myself progressing within SIB within two months. Also looking forward to bringing Capri into the ranks of our K9 units. He's getting bored at home.

What do you like doing outside of work?
Well as boring as it may sound, I am a mother of 3 beautiful children and that pretty much IS my life outside of work, whether I like it or not. When I do manage to find time for myself outside of work, A hobby of mine is attending comedy shows. As I said I'm a person that loves to laugh and have a good time, I just know there's a time and place.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH
  • Are you a cat or a dog person? & Do you have a favorite type or breed?
  • Sergeant Sayaka Yukimura wrote:I am very much a cat person. My preferred breed are siamese cats, especially the kitties, as they are the cutest!
Master Deputy Hans Waltz wrote:DOG person

All big breeds like huskies, Newfoundland, samoyed, and German shepherds. Big and cute.
Master Deputy Baron Faust wrote:Naturally, as I am K9, I would say that I am more of a dog person. I love all animals, but I have had dogs my whole life. It is a little hard to say which are my favorites though. I do have a few favorites; Irish Wolfhounds, French Mastiffs, Australian Cattle Dogs.
Master Deputy Trixie Bankshot wrote:I love all animals! They each have their own perks and benefits! Dogs are amazing protectors, companions, workers and they help you get exercise! Cats are excellent friends, lap warmers and a dignified deterrents to pests. They both have so many different personalities and I think that is beautiful.

My favourite dog breeds are the Bernese Mountain Dog, the Border Collie, the American Bully, the red Golden Retriever and, of course, the Borzoi! Best cat breeds include the Scottish Fold, the Devon Rex, the Norwegian Forest cat and the Cheetah!

I own several of my own dogs and cats including Moxxie the Border Collie, Officer Goodboy the Black Lab, Butch the Cane Corso , Marshmallow the pug, Rogue the Maine Coon cross, Big Orange the Ragdoll, an unnamed silver kitty and Sunburst the mountain lion.
Deputy Sheriff II Stefan Dobrev wrote:Cat person, favorite breed is orange and feisty.
