'Tis the Season!
Winter to be exact.
This year has flown by and we're almost at the end. The wonderful PR team has put together this Press Release.
The Press Release is mostly focused on the festive build up to Christmas as it has been a relatively chill November. We have recently moved into our winter uniforms and dug out some of our snow vehicles from the garage. Please enjoy this press release!
Finding Hope During the Holidays: SADOC is Here for You
The holiday season is often painted as a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration. But for many, Christmas and the surrounding weeks can be a difficult time, stirring up feelings of loneliness, sadness, and even anxiety. For those struggling, this season can feel isolating, especially when surrounded by images of holiday cheer that may not match their reality.

At SADOC, we understand that the holidays don’t look the same for everyone. While some might be planning family gatherings and festivities, others may face different challenges—grief, stress, or a sense of disconnection. If you’re feeling down, please know you’re not alone; we’re here for you.

Our team at SADOC is available to listen, support, and offer advice whenever you need it. We are here to help you work through these difficult emotions, no matter the time of year. We understand that reaching out might feel intimidating, especially if you feel that others may not understand your experience. But we want to remind you that there’s no need to go through this alone. Talking about your feelings can often be the first step towards healing and finding comfort amid a challenging season.

We also have a dedicated Psych Division, with specialists trained to provide compassionate care and psychological support. They have extensive experience in helping people navigate the complex emotions that often arise around the holidays. Whether you’re dealing with seasonal affective disorder, loneliness, or any other emotional challenges, our team is here to guide you through. SADOC’s Psych Division can provide coping strategies, a listening ear, and, most importantly, a space where you can feel safe to share your feelings.

If you’re finding this season hard to handle, remember that there’s a community ready to support you at SADOC. So, please reach out whenever you need to—our team is here, and together, we’ll work towards finding a brighter day.

You’re not alone.
Let SADOC be your support through this season and beyond.

Employee of the Month
Each month here at the San Andreas Department of Corrections we like to bestow an honor on this month's best performing officer who has shown time and time again that they put maximum effort and commitment into their work. The officer selected for this prestigious award has proved themselves as a representation of how each officer working for our department should strive to be.
Employee of the Month November 2024
Questions for the Employee of the Month
We like to ask the employee of the month a few questions to get their perspective on the job and what makes a great officer, below are a few answers to common questions by our Employee of the Month:

Looking back, what are memorable achievements from your service so far?
My most memorable moment so far was organizing the Run for the Ribbon charity event to raise awareness for breast cancer. The journey was filled with anticipation and nerves, but seeing it come together so successfully was unforgettable.

Moving forward what are the next goals as a SADOC officer?
Moving forward, I just want to keep improving and doing even better. My main goals are to organize even more impactful events, connect with more people, and make sure our initiatives really resonate with everyone involved

Any advice they would give to future prospects who might think about joining the SADOC?
I would say take the leap I was doubting myself thinking I could never do a job like that but I love our family and how everyone looks out for each other. Also, Believe in yourself you can achieve so much when you have a little bit of belief!

Visitation
Has your wife, brother, husband, sister, mother, uncle, friend, or enemy ever been arrested and brought to SADOC? Well, you can visit them!
Two Irish meeting with a Chinese
Visitation at DOC is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, including holidays!
There is a requirement for at least two Correctional Officers to be free to assist in visitation so if some aren't immediately available then feel free to come back later.

The visitation rules are as follows:
  • No physical contact
  • No whispering
  • No passing of items. Items that wish to be exchanged will be checked beforehand for contraband.
  • Maximum time is 1 hour ((15 minutes OOCLY))
For those that like to exploit visitation, we have a blacklist in place that restricts certain individuals, such as our MSIs, from being able to be visited or visit. Visitation is a benefit and can be declined for any number of reasons.

Winter Operational Changes

Winter Has Arrived! Stay Safe and Warm with Our New Winter Uniforms and Fleet

Image

As we’ve officially entered winter, we've updated our look to match the season and ensure you're able to identify us easily during these cold months. We are proud to unveil our new winter uniforms designed for comfort and warmth!

► Show Spoiler

In addition, our fleet of cars has been fully updated to meet the demands of the winter weather. Our vehicles are now equipped to handle the snow and ice, ensuring safe and reliable service during this chilly time of year.
► Show Spoiler
With snow and ice covering many paths, we remind everyone to be cautious and mind their step as grounds can become slippery and dangerous. Be especially careful in icy areas, and always walk slowly to avoid falls.

Remember, cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia and frostbite if proper care isn’t taken:
  • Hypothermia occurs when your body loses heat faster than it can produce it, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Early signs include shivering, slurred speech, and confusion. If you or someone else is showing signs, get them indoors and seek medical attention immediately.
  • Frostbite happens when skin and underlying tissues freeze, causing numbness, pale skin, and stiffness. To prevent frostbite, wear layers of clothing, especially on exposed areas like fingers, toes, and your face. If you suspect frostbite, warm the affected area slowly (but never with direct heat like a fire) and get medical help.
Stay warm, stay safe, and let’s make this winter a safe one for all!
Divisional Spotlight - Human Resources
spacer
The Human Resources Division
spacer
Our divisional spotlight this month is going to focus on the work of our Human Resources (HR) team. This division does a lot of work behind the scenes that members of the public generally don't have the opportunity to bear witness to! The human resources division are the essential gears that keep everything ticking internally, and are the main force behind allowing for new members of the public to join the SADOC team!

What are Human Resources?
The human resources team have a vast majority of responsibilities that they undertake, as a member of the public the main time you will see DOC is when they're responding to applications or posting any employee adjustments! However internally the HR team conduct a lot of work that goes into making sure that the internal operations work like a smoothy operating engine! The HR team ensure that our team is completely up-to date on all their duties by hosting two academies during their training phase! Then once they've passed through their academy phases, our correctional officers are then held to complete mandated training to be able to move up in the ranks!

Human Resources team Q&A!

We have had the opportunity to speak to some of the members of our HR team to ask them a little bit about the HR division!
Matthew Armstrong, HR Administrator
SPACER
Why did you choose to pursue a career in Human Resources?
I joined HR because I am a people person, I have a passion for HR, we are the first point of contact for many people and I think having someone who has a passion for the job shines through in the way you deal with people on a day to day basis.

What are your main responsibilities as part of the HR team?
Main duties involved in HR are dealing with applications, we are the first point of contact for many applications, so when I deal with an application I do like to try and follow through with the whole process, allowing that person to put a face to a name. We deal with the whole application process, ranging from interview all the way through to the way DOC works.
Katie Schneider Human Resources Director
SPACER
What does a divisional head do?
I do a little bit of everything! However, my main focus is on creating, updating, and organizing documents and managing all the Human Resources employees.

What would you like for the members of the public to know about HR?
HR is so much more than people often realize. We handle a wide range of responsibilities, mainly behind the scenes. Given the demanding workload, this division is best suited for individuals who are genuinely passionate about administrative tasks.
Bradley Coot Human Resources Deputy Director
SPACER
Why did you choose a career in Human Resources, and what aspects of the role do you enjoy most?
I chose a career in Human Resources because I loved the idea of helping candidates secure legal work within our department. I also appreciate how Human Resources supports not only civilians but also all our staff within SADOC. And yes, I enjoy paperwork, so it’s a win-win for me

What is your favorite aspect of your role in Human Resources, and how do you contribute to candidate development?
In my role, I help oversee all the responsibilities within Human Resources. However, my favorite aspect of the job is training the candidates in our division and watching them grow and thrive

Phone Calls
    Image
When an inmate arrives with a brand new iFruit 69 they will have it quickly confiscated from them. However, if they wish to retain their phone till they enter the cellblock to make a phone call then they can request it.

The 10-15 can use the phone call for any number of reasons such as letting their mom know they're going to be in prison for a few years, telling their significant other to come to visit them, or getting a friend to feed their pet while they're incarcerated.

Phone calls are a privilege, not a right. Any Correctional Officer has the right to decline you for a phone call for any reason they see fit.
      Employee Spotlight
      Employee Spotlight: Niah Lionheart

      Image

In a recent high-stakes situation, Niah Lionheart demonstrated the critical value of her hand-to-hand combat training, using her skills to swiftly neutralize a potential threat and protect those around her. Her decisive action in the face of danger serves as a powerful testament to the effectiveness of our training protocols and the importance of preparedness.

Niah’s success reinforces our commitment to rigorous training procedures that equip our team with the skills needed to act confidently and effectively, no matter the challenge. This incident highlights just how essential it is to maintain and prioritize such training as a cornerstone of our departments safety and operational excellence.
Can you please explain the situation and what led up to you using your hand-to-hand combat skills?
The Inmates were arrested and brought to the DOC facility. Nathan and I processed them and placed them in the cellblock. After completing the processing, Nathan and I went on an exterior patrol. During the patrol, we received a radio call that the inmates were requesting to speak to me. After finishing the patrol, Nathan and I entered the cellblock, where both inmates baited me towards the cell bars and grabbed my hair. They demanded 5,000 stamps, threatening to snap my neck if their demands were not met. I felt helpless as the cell bars were between us, preventing any hand-to-hand response.

As the situation escalated, Matthew Armstrong activated the CERT pager. When CERT arrived, the inmate noticed and demanded that no heavy weapons be brought into the cellblock, or I would be killed.

Shortly after, another inmate, whose name I can’t recall, was processed and placed in the cellblock, joining the hostage situation. Now, I had three inmates to deal with. But it didn’t end there—a fourth inmate, locked in a cell, yelled, “Snap her neck!” signaling his hostility as well.

At this point, the inmates made a critical error. They took my keys and moved me to the cell with the fourth inmate, locking me inside alone with him. Now, with no iron bars between us and the unexpierenced inmate holding only my hair, I managed to perform a hand-to-hand maneuver and freed myself.
Which specific techniques from your hand-to-hand combat training helped you the most in handling the hostage situation?
I performed the "choke hold" that Matthew Armstrong taught me at the academy.
Were there moments during the hostage situation when you realized your hand-to-hand combat skills were giving you an advantage?
Yes, when I was alone with the inmate and he was within my reach, I knew I could easily take him one-on-one because of my training.
Based on your experience, what advice would you give to fellow employees or the public about the value of hand-to-hand combat training in preparing for unexpected situations?
Hand to hand combat training isnt just about learning moves, it’s about building the confidence to handle yourself in situations where every second counts. In my experience, it’s the difference between feeling helpless and knowing you have the skills to take control, even when the odds are against you. For anyone who works in this field or faces unpredictable encounters, this training can be the one thing that turns the tables in your favor. It’s a skill set you might hope you never need, but when you do, it can mean the difference between surviving and becoming a victim. So, take it seriously—because it could save your life or someone elses
