Hello and welcome to the November 2024 Newsletter. This month we have seen familiar faces returning to our ranks, including a large influx of trainees due to the success of the Walk-In Recruitment Event. We are approaching winter swiftly, and our deputies will continue to keep the county safe. You may also be able to spot a deputy or two with festive hats during this season!

In this Newsletter, you’ll find messages from Sheriff Kirk, highlights of outstanding deputies, division spotlights, and a rundown of key statistics and rank adjustments. Below you can find hyperlinks if you wish to go to specific sections.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and we hope you enjoy this month's newsletter!
MESSAGE FROM THE SHERIFF
  • Image
    Sheriff Bobby Kirk
As November comes to a close, we reflect on yet another successful and calm month. This would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our deputies, staff, and the ongoing support from the community.

A major highlight of this month was our walk-in recruitment drive held on November 30th. It was a great success, thanks to the efforts of our Recruitment and Employment Division and the staff who volunteered their time to ensure the event ran smoothly. We are thrilled to announce that this drive allowed us to host an academy for 12 promising new recruits on November 31st. This is a step forward in strengthening our team, and we are excited about the additional academies planned for the future.

As we transition into December, we embrace the festive season with its unique demands. Many of our deputies and staff will be taking time to visit family and friends or pursuing other personal plans during this season. While this may mean fewer deputies visible on the streets at times, rest assured that we remain committed to being present where our community needs us the most.

We also look forward to continuing our tradition of public events during December. These gatherings are a wonderful way for us to connect with the people we serve and spread holiday cheer. Keep an eye out for announcements about these upcoming events.

We’re hopeful for another calm and peaceful month as we prepare to close out 2024 and welcome 2025. Thank you all; our staff, deputies, and community members, for making this year such a success.

Stay safe, enjoy the festive season, and let’s move into the new year together with strength and optimism.

DEPUTY OF THE MONTH

  • Investigator I Dymond Cole
    Image
Ret. Investigator Dymond Cole transferred to the Los Santos Sheriff's Department in June 2024. During their tenure within the department, they have shown dedication to their work and is highly trusted in their conduct. In October 2024, Cole reached the rank of Investigator I and worked in the Major Crimes Division before transferring to the Los Santos Police Department in the end of November. We wish to congratulate them on their achievements and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Since you were highlighted in May 2024, how has your time within the Sheriff's Department been since then?
My time in the sheriff's department since then has been pretty good. There's always ups and downs but I don't have much to complain about. I feel like I've become a somewhat valued member in the department which was my goal. Be helpful, be useful, make friends.

What is your most memorable moment while serving as a deputy for the LSSD?
I think my most memorable moment in the department has to be when me, Deputy Hoffman ended up saving Deputy Thompson's life from two individuals shooting him. He's such a great guy, and it was such a good feeling to be able to help him when he was in need.

What is the greatest feeling about being a deputy?
The best feeling is being part of something bigger then yourself. Also feeling like it's more then just work. I'm part of a community that welcomed me in with smiles and open arms, and a lot of banter.

What do you like doing outside of work?
Spend time with my kids. Drink a little wine, and comedy shows.
DIVISION SPOTLIGHT

  • The Los Santos Sheriff's K9 unit is headed by Lieutenant Tom Brown, who shared the following overview on the popular and important division.

The Los Santos Sheriff's K9 Unit's specialities are in firearms and narcotics focusing on detecting illegal drugs, concealed firearms, and ammunition. K9s are trained to identify scents of illicit drugs, for example, cocaine, marijuana, or LSD) we also train the K9s to identify scents of gunpowder residue on weapons, ammunition and residue on their person. The K9 division assists in vehicle searches, security details, vehicle checkpoints and large events.

K9s also help locate suspects during pursuits and any weapons or contraband discarded in an attempt to hide items. Depending on their breed, their acute senses are around 10,000 to 100,000 times stronger than the human sense of smell. Many individuals have attempted to mask the scent of firearms, narcotics, etc but the way K9s are trained and how their sense of smell works they can bypass multiple layers of masking scents to sniff out their target.

The Sheriff's K9 Unit is the county's specialized canine team that focuses on the detection of narcotic and residual substances. This team is composed of two main elements: the handler and K9. Together you will work to prevent the distribution of narcotic supplies and help aid in the planning and execution of residual events. You will also work with different divisions within the Sheriff's Department such as GnD, SIB, SED and HED and conduct training with your K9. If you wish to have your very own buddy to patrol around with you on shift feel free to apply to the Sheriff's K9 Unit!!
DEPUTY SPOTLIGHT

    Corporal Clay Thompson
Corporal Clay Thompson joined the Los Santos Sheriff's Department in the middle of February 2024. Gradually, Clay has worked his way up the ranks within the department and have proven to be hard working and engaged in his work. Due to his conduct, he was promoted to Corporal in the middle of October 2024 and is currently undergoing the Supervisor Training Program.

Why did you join the Los Santos County Sheriff's Department?
I joined the Sheriff’s Department originally to try a different career path from what I was used to in the City, being previously employed by the Emergency Medical Services mainly. I wanted to be able to provide that same level of help to our City and could think of no place better than the Sheriffs Department.

Why did you apply for the Sheriff Department's Supervisor Training Program
I applied to the Supervisor Training Program to progress my career within the Sheriff’s Department as I’ve never shied away from the leadership role. Always aiming to improve my skills and push myself to higher limits. To me it was a no brainer to apply to the training program and see if I had what it took.

What is your most memorable moment while serving as a deputy for the LSSD?
My most memorable moments as a Los Santos Sheriff’s Deputy has to be within the Special Enforcement Details, unfortunately I’m not able to share specifics but just being with my brothers and sisters on the field, doing what we’re trained to do and saving lives has truly been the most memorable.

If you could go back in time and give 8 year clay one piece of advice, what would it be?
If I could go back in time to give myself one piece of advise it’d be to put down that cowboy hat and listen to some biggie smalls or tupac so they’d be able to get a better understanding of their true roots. I’d also tell them to never give up too!

Where do you see yourself in the LSSD two months from now?
In two months I like to believe I’ll be a full fledged Supervisor within department, still be out there on the field doing my job, whether it’s catching speeders, stopping a shootout, intercepting a suspect or doing community outreach at Bayview.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH
-
What is the best part about the upcoming season and holiday?
-
  • Sergeant Baron Faust
The best part of the holiday season is getting to spend time with my family, eat good food, laugh and joke, and overall have a good time in the coldest months. I love to keep a fire going and cuddling with my dogs while reading a book, especially while it's snowing.

    Deputy Sheriff III Nicholas Rajcula
Honestly the best part of the holidays to me is being with the people you care about.

    Deputy Sheriff I Mason Ross
One of my favorite things about the holiday season would have to be at the snow! There is something truly magical about seeing all of the holiday lights reflect off fresh powdery snow.

The Christmas music isn’t half bad either in my opinion!
