Welcome to another LSEMS Press Release! With October behind us, we're welcoming November and its autumn chill. Today we'll be talking about employee and department updates, as well as the Halloween Event, how Colds work, and how you can be more ready for a grandma falling down and not being able to get up due to her hip not being very cash money.

But before that - the Chief's Joke of the Month!

        BASIC MEDICAL INFORMATION
          Image
          Broken Hip
As we get older, we are less stable on our feet and more prone to falls. When we fall over, we might land on a hip and cause some serious damage to it! Here's how to help if you witness an elderly person fall:
            • Leave the person lying down as moving them around could cause further damage.
            • Dial 911 immediately and calmly explain the situation.
            • Palpate (medically examine by touch) the area gently to confirm the internal (closed) fracture. If it were to be a compound (open) fracture, you would see a bone sticking out!
            • Get a blanket and wrap it around their leg and pelvis. Twist the blanket together to stabilize the pelvis the best you can. If using a blanket, wrap the blanket around the pelvis and between the legs. Twist the blanket together like a tourniquet to stabilize the pelvis.
            • Apply an icepack over the area of the pelvis where it hurts.
            • Wait for medical assistance. Bonus points if you keep the patient calm by talking to them in a reassuring manner!
            spacer

At no point should you try to transport or move the injured person yourself! Doing so could cause far more harm than good!

            CITY WIDE HALLOWEEN EVENT
            spacer
            spacer
Members of LSEMS assisted in the yearly city-wide Halloween event in which many departments and organizations participated, bringing different activities to the city. This year, we stationed at Pillbox and asked Halloween-themed questions to those partaking in the event.
Each participant was asked a random question, and the full list of questions can be found below!
We had over one hundred people attend the event and most of them were good at halloween trivia, but a few of them failed and were subjected to torment by their peers.

Don't overdo it with the treats you collected during the event as overnedulging on sugar can cause cavities! Remember to brush your teeth diligently, having at least a 30-minute break between the sweets you ate and the brushing.

              MEDICAL TREATMENT AT HOME
                Image

Doctor Cat is back and ready to give you some medical tips, tricks, and knowledge!
With Autumn bringing colder temperatures, you need to bring a jacket with you! September and especially October and onwards are the easiest months to make your nose get clogged up so bad you forget that you were once able to breathe through it freely!
                  • What is a "cold"?
                    • A "cold", or more specifically the Common Cold is a viral and infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract that primarily affects your nose, throat, sinuses, and larynx (the larynx contains your vocal chords!). Generally speaking, the most common symptoms can include coughing, a sore throat, a runny nose, sneezing, headaches, and a fever.
                  • What causes the Common Cold?
                    • There are MANY different virus strains (a strain essentially a 'variety' of a virus) that have an implication of causing the Common Cold, however, the rhinovirus causes upwards of 80% of the cases of the Common Cold. Its name is derived from the Greek word for "nose" ( "rhis", meaning "nose"), and the Latin word "vīrus", combining the Romanized version of "rhis" with the word "virus", we get rhinovirus!
                  • What can you do to avoid it?
                    • The best way to avoid it is, in short, staying away from contamination. What does this mean? To begin with, ensure that you are minimizing your exposure to someone who is sick with the common cold, as they are the primary source of it.
Then, you turn to personal hygiene. You want to wash your hands often and thoroughly, especially if you have been outside of your home. Note that you should still be washing your hands at home, especially before eating and after bathroom use, as not doing this can contribute to weakening your immune system, allowing the virus to slip through.
                  • What can you do if you already caught it?
                    • Rest, eat, hydrate, and manage your symptoms.
It is of paramount importance to:
                      • Provide your body time to rest (reducing activity, especially physical strain);
                      • Provide it with a good array of food (if you can't eat due to symptoms, try to ingest liquid calories);
                      • Provide it with enough water to not strain your organs (you should hydrate at all times, but increase fluid intake while sick);
                      • Manage your symptoms to ease the strain of the illness on your mental health, especially if it's a sore throat, headache, cough, or fever.

The best way to make yourself better is a meal, warm tea, some ibuprofen (or other NSAIDs), and laying down.

There are multiple felonies and charges that will default the application status as DENIED regardless of references, letters of recommendation, or programs passed**:
                          • Serious Felonies (SF) except for SF03 & SF07
                          • Drug Felonies (DF)

                          • GF13 - Arson
                          • GF14 - False Impersonation
                          • GF16 - Tampering with Evidence

                          • GF24 - Perjury

There are multiple felonies and charges that will set the application status as DENIED unless the applicant successfully underwent SADOC's Felon Reformation Program:
                          • GF19 - Abuse or Desecration of Dead Human Body
                          • SF03 - Involuntary or Vehicular Manslaughter
                          • SF07 - Bank Robbery

                          • Drug Misdemeanours (DM)

Additionally, Firearm Possession Charges are categorized as such:
                          • WM02 - Possession of a Class 1 Firearm - 2 months*
                          • WF03 - Possession of a Class 2 Firearm - 6 months*
                          • WF04 - Possession of a Class 3 Firearm - 6 months*

Felonies that are outside the charges mentioned above have a wait time of 6 months*.

Other Misdemeanors that are outside the charges mentioned above have a wait time of 2 months*

NOTE* The applicant may go through the San Andreas Department of Correction's Felon Reformation Program before applying and provide a reference for the recruitment personnel to review in order to shorten the wait time. Undergoing the Felon Reformation Program does not guarantee leniency, as applicants' criminal records are considered on a case-by-case basis, and on the other hand, we may be more lenient towards one-time offenders than repeat ones.
Additionally, employment with a clean track record within more lenient government-funded organizations, agencies, companies, and firms may contribute positively toward each individual case.

NOTE** Only in cases of charges that are 12 months or older, special reviews may take place for one-time offenders for charges that are otherwise entirely eliminatory. These reviews would require substantial feedback from another government-funded employer.

Should you wish to verify or get more information on the subject of criminal records and their interaction(s) with our recruitment procedures, contact ✉︎ Emilia Thalmer or ✉︎ Alex Mpache.

Get the jackets out guys- oh wait we actually have jackets this year!! The frosty part of the year is rolling in faster and faster and I'm honestly thrilled! Won't be long until we have more work on our hands as the snow season is approaching slowly but surely, but we'll handle it as we do always - without hesitation!
With it now being November of 2024, in just under two weeks, the 14th will mark the full four uninterrupted years of my employment with the department. Honestly, it flew past faster than I'd realized. So many people trained, so many friendships forged, so many projects started (and completed), and boy oh boy so many broken legs splinted.

Here's to many more! Take care out there, remember to persevere through hardships, and keep on keeping on.
