MESSAGE FROM THE SHERIFF
  • Image
    Sheriff Bobby Kirk
As we move from October into the winter season, I wanted to share some updates and reflections from this past month. October was a productive and festive month for our department, marked by both community engagement and professional success. I’m pleased to report that there were no structural or personnel changes this month, allowing our team to continue serving with stability and focus. This continuity is important to us, as it ensures that we remain dedicated to our community without any disruptions.

One of the highlights of this October was our celebration of Halloween. This year, we tried something new and encouraged our Sheriff's Deputies to wear costumes while on duty. It brought a unique sense of camaraderie and allowed us to connect with the community in a more light-hearted way. I hope those of you who saw our team enjoyed seeing a different side of our officers--one that reminds us that we are all part of the same community, celebrating together.

I’d also like to express my appreciation for everyone involved in our recent career fair, hosted by the Sheriff’s Information Division. This event was a resounding success, providing an excellent opportunity for community members to learn more about careers in law enforcement and for us to showcase the diverse roles and values within our department. The fair brought in a great turnout and served as a bridge for future connections with those who might one day join our ranks.

As we now transition to colder months, we look forward to the festive season of November and December. Winter brings unique challenges and increased demands, but it also brings opportunities to gather, celebrate, and reflect on the year. Our department is preparing for the season ahead, and I want to emphasize the importance of balance and wellness for everyone in our community.

Thank you for your continued support. We’re grateful for the trust you place in us and look forward to continuing to serve with dedication and pride. Please stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy the holiday season.

DEPUTY OF THE MONTH

  • Deputy Sheriff I James Hawkes
    Image
Deputy Sheriff I James Hawkes re-joined the Los Santos County Sheriff's Department on September 25th, 2024 and has been a stalwart part of the department since. He passed his Field Training Program and was promoted to Deputy Sheriff I this October 13th, and has quickly shown the excellence he was known for during his previous tenure with the department. The Supervisory team has chosen him as our Deputy of the Month, and wish him the very best in the months to come.

When did you join the Los Santos County Sheriff's Department?
I initially transferred from the Police Department to the LSSD on May 31, 2020. I served until February 19, 2021, when I decided to focus on my business. This year, I was fortunate to be reinstated on September 23, 2024, ready to bring my experience back to the department with a renewed perspective.

What is your favorite thing about being a deputy at the LSSD?
My favorite thing about being a deputy at the LSSD is the strong sense of community—both with the public and within the department. The team here feels like a big family, always welcoming and supportive, which creates a heartfelt and inclusive environment. It’s incredibly rewarding to see that this sense of connection remains as strong as ever. I also take pride in seeing deputies I’ve trained grow and even surpass my previous rank, which shows how the department continues to develop and uplift each member.

What is your most memorable moment while serving as a deputy for the LSSD?
Working with CJ Ryan in the Air Support Division in 2021 to help build the division was incredibly memorable. That experience deepened my commitment to law enforcement, especially within ASD, where I plan to rejoin when the opportunity arises. Another recent memorable moment was during a pursuit where I rode as a passenger with Investigator Rimmer. I was truly impressed by his skill in keeping up with a fast-moving car for over 30 minutes. Both of these experiences have highlighted the exceptional teamwork and talent within our department.

Why did you become a deputy for the LSSD?
I joined law enforcement back in 2019, driven by a strong interest in air support, which has always been a passion of mine. Returning now isn’t just about rejoining the family and reconnecting with old friends; I’m also eager to explore new opportunities within the department, especially with the Sheriff's Investigations Bureau (SIB). During my previous term, we only had the Parole Division, so the addition of an investigative bureau has definitely piqued my curiosity and opened up new possibilities for my role here.

What is the greatest feeling about being a deputy?
The greatest feeling is knowing I’m part of something meaningful that directly impacts others lives. Being able to return to this role only strengthens that feeling, as I can see how valuable this work is both personally and for the community.

Where do you see yourself in the LSSD two months from now?
In two months, I see myself as part of the Air Support Division (ASD) team, continuing to pursue my passion for air support. At the same time, I hope to begin my journey in the Sheriff's Investigations Bureau (SIB) as a Crime Scene Technician, where I can develop new skills and contribute to both divisions.

What do you like doing outside of work?
Outside of my role in law enforcement, I maintain my general store and stay actively involved with Assured Services. Recently, the company appointed a new CEO, bringing in fresh perspectives and changes. I’ve been working closely with the new CEO, helping him get comfortable and help navigate the transition, which has been an exciting experience.
DIVISION SPOTLIGHT
  • Image
    Air Support Division

The Air Support Division, led by Commanding Officer Lieutenant Tom Brown and Assistant Commanding Officer Investigator II Hugo Hernandez, is crucial to the LSSD's airborne law enforcement program. Its main objective is to decrease crime and create a sense of security in the community. By providing swift responses, strategic insights, and aerial evaluations of incidents, our team aims to achieve this goal safely and professionally. Only the most exceptional LSSD Deputies are chosen for the Flight Program of the Air Support Division as it requires top-notch skills and abilities. Our department currently has two helicopters, one dedicated to tactical operations and the other for general flight.
Baron Faust wrote:As the eye in the sky for the department, we take great pride in our pilot's abilities and their effort in helping our community. Without our pilots, we would not be able to react as swiftly to ongoing situations or swoop in to rescue injured civilians. The Air Support Division is full of capable and talented individuals who love to serve their community.
