Car Break-in Prevention Tips

Los Santos: Car break-ins are a more frequent occurrence than you might think, and they can happen in mere seconds, with thieves often searching out easy targets and valuables. The Los Santos Police Department aims to aid and educate the general public with advice and tips on how to prevent car break-ins and theft from vehicles, especially with Christmas having just passed, people traveling, and likely stopping for breaks with potential valuables left in their vehicles.

In any season, those with malicious intent are often on the lookout for a quick grab. The following tips help reduce the risk and keep your vehicle and belongings safe.
  • Always make sure that your vehicle(s) are locked, even if you are stepping out only for a few minutes. Lock the door and make sure all windows are properly closed. Double-check the vehicle before you walk away; do not blindly trust your vehicle manufacturer's automatic locks, as they may be faulty or fail to engage where expected.
  • Hide your valuables, or preferably take them with you out of the vehicle. Never leave electronics, documents, bags, work tools, wallets, or shopping items visible for others to see; try to conceal them where and when possible. Never leave your keys inside of your vehicle, including spare keys, as they are a common target of vehicle break-ins.
  • Use your car alarms, security systems, and cameras, or other anti-theft devices such as a steering wheel lock; having deterrents visible makes your vehicle a less attractive target, and has a high probability of having any potential malicious actors skip over your vehicle.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and park in well-lit, busy areas. Avoid dark or isolated spots when possible, and try to park under street lights. If you have a garage available, park inside. When leaving your vehicle or witnessing someone loitering near other vehicles or properties acting suspiciously, report it to law enforcement by calling 911 so that they may investigate.
  • Do not rummage through the inside of your vehicle's trunk in densely populated areas, as common targets of malicious actors are vehicle owners who, at 'hot spots' like Los Santos Parking, are looking through their vehicle's trunk. Wait until there are fewer people around you, or temporarily move your vehicle before checking inside.

Preventing any sort of break-ins, vehicles included, is a shared effort, and the principle of "see something, say something" applies best. Law enforcement cannot be everywhere at once, meaning that police require your assistance in making them aware of these situations when they are transpiring. Please follow these simple steps to help make your neighborhood a safer, better place for everyone.

If you witness an in-progress break-in, call 911 immediately and avoid confronting the potential thief or burglar unless absolutely unavoidable.
