Los Santos: During August, parents in the City of Los Santos will be sending their children back to school, with a large number of these children using vehicles, bicycles, buses, or walking to get to school.
Comprehensive data publicly available regarding "back to school" traffic shows that in key statistics, in the past years, over a hundred people have died in crashes related to back-to-school transportation, and in the last twelve years, over a thousand people have died in such crashes, with 198 being children (ages 18 and under); of these children, 38% were pedestrians, 18% were in school-owned vehicles such as school buses, 3% were riding a bicycle, and 1% was using personal devices such as phones or tablets. An estimated 55% of child pedestrians were aged 5 to 10, and significantly more school-aged children fell victim during school drop-off and pick-up hours.
In an effort to protect the students and children of Los Santos, the Los Santos Police Department aims to bring awareness to motorists of the general public and parents dropping their children off at their schools, and highlight and emphasize several key safety areas as students head back to school for the next academic year.
These talking points are crucial for drivers, parents, and students to promote a safe environment.

Back to School Safety Awareness

Los Santos: During August, parents in the City of Los Santos will be sending their children back to school, with a large number of these children using vehicles, bicycles, buses, or walking to get to school.

These talking points are crucial for drivers, parents, and students to promote a safe environment.
For drivers:
- Be alert and lower your speed, as school zones and neighborhoods will see a lot of traffic, pedestrian and vehicle, especially children. Pay close attention to your surroundings while driving, especially before and after school hours due to increased traffic, and adhere to the speed limits as established in the San Andreas Penal Code.
- Pay extra attention to children walking or biking, particularly near bus stops, playgrounds, residential areas, and schools. Children may dart into the street unexpectedly or make sudden movements while biking.
- Adhere to specific drop-off and pick-up instructions of your children's school to ensure safety of all students and avoid or reduce congestion.
For parents:
- If your child walks or rides their bicycle to school, go over safe routes, traffic signals, and the importance of being aware of their surroundings and visible to drivers with them again.
- Teach your children to arrive early at bus stops and to stay a safe distance from the curb while waiting, at least 10 feet, and ensure that they wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before boarding.
- Remind (teen) drivers to always adhere to speed limits, wear their seatbelts, put away their phones and other devices, and limit the number of passengers to reduce and minimize potential distractions while driving.
For students:
- Use sidewalks whenever possible, and if there is no sidewalk, walk on the edge of the street facing traffic.
- Use marked crosswalks, and look left-right-left before crossing the street.
- Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.
- Pay attention to traffic, drivers, and other pedestrians; avoid distractions like using your phone while walking or riding a bicycle.
