Los Santos: The Los Santos Police Department's Detective Services Group, acronym "DSG", is the entry point to all officers wishing to pursue an investigative career with the Detective Bureau, the Bureau responsible for all criminal investigations. The Detective Services Group houses the Detective Support Unit and Detective Training Program.

The Detective Services Group is often in the background but is no less important to the operations of the Los Santos Police Department as any other division or unit within the Department, as it is the dedication of the personnel assigned to the Detective Services Group that sees the initiative to ensure case files and police- and crime reports are given the necessary attention from start to finish.

Initially intended to streamline the recruitment process and supporting services of the Detective Bureau, today, the Detective Services Group exists of the Detective Training Program, the Detective Support Unit, and has further plans for future expansion with the introduction of a third unit.

The Detective Training Program offers the curriculum to prospective detectives. Enrolled in the program as police officers, Detective Trainees are taught the important aspects and the ins-and-outs of investigative work in law enforcement, the way to work with the tools and equipment provided to our detectives, how to work with other officers, other individuals, departments, and divisions for the purposes of investigations, and are provided a general insight into and prepared for both main detective divisions within the Bureau.

The Detective Support Unit is the entry point for the Detective Bureau as a whole, its recruitment offering both primary and secondary positions; primary assignments will be held by Detective Support Officers who, typically, advance to the position of Detective Trainee, should they wish to pursue an investigative law enforcement career, whereas secondary assignments are held by officers with a different focus in the Department who still wish to contribute to case files.

Crimes reported through the online police report form and portal of the Los Santos Police Department are the responsibility of the Detective Services Group and Detective Support Unit, which will see case files being worked on by Detective Support Officers and, at times, aided by Police Detectives of the Bureau.

The Detective Services Group is currently led and spearheaded by Captain III Jason Steel, Commanding Officer, Detective Services Group, a long-time veteran of the Los Santos Police Department and its Detective Bureau, and Detective III Lance Sage, Assistant Commanding Officer, Detective Services Group, a veteran where detective support services are concerned, as the previous Detective-in-Charge, Detective Support Unit.

With Captain Steel at the helm, later joined by Detective Sage once positions were formalized, the Detective Services Group saw significant development and was slotted into the Detective Bureau's structure and hierarchy with relative ease, and saw further development of the programs offered by the group to enrolled students to ensure that the best possible service was provided to them, and to extension, the public.

For the purposes of this article, the Media Relations Division has inquired with Captain Steel, who has taken time out of his busy schedule to provide media relations with a few quotes and statements with respect to the Detective Services Group, for which we are grateful. The following questions were posed, and Captain Steel answered as follows;

What is a general idea of the purposes of your division?
The name of the division is very fitting of its purpose, in that it is the supporting arm for the entirety of the Detective Bureau; the division's most important purpose is the training of officers joining the detective bureau, but also overseeing the training of those officers as prospective detectives; it is also responsible for providing field support to all officers in the department with forensic kits and other such specialized equipment.

What do you believe are the current strengths of your division?
I believe a strength of the division is the morale of its instructors, all of our current instructors are past graduates of the training program that they now teach others under; this means both that they are very dedicated to their work, taking it on a voluntary basis and that they are very familiar with the curriculum and have contributed to its further development.

How has the division evolved under your leadership?
The division has been created under my leadership from the project stage into a fully working division with its own staff, responsibilities and command team; it took over some parts of prior divisions such as the detective training program which existed before, but was loose in its curriculum and overall training material. I believe one of the key features I have instilled in its programs is standardization; both the initial training and later detective training will feel familiar to any officer that has completed the field training program.

How do you believe the division has caused the processes of the Detective Bureau to evolve?
I believe the division has caused the processes of the Detective Bureau to evolve in terms of training, which has been standardized to a great deal, ensuring both quality and consistency in the training of officers new to the detective bureau, which in turn results in more consistent and reliable detective outcomes. Furthermore, the division has taken primary role in managing crime reports and their investigation, working with all the other divisions in the bureau.

What are your future plans for the division?
For the future of the divisions, there are both short-term and long-term plans; in the short term we plan to institute standardized tracking for training sessions, seeing parity with other divisions of the department and provide the current crime report format with a facelift. In the long term, we plan to open a new unit under the division, with a yet to be public objective, but one that will provide even more support to all officers in the department.

The Detective Services Group will continue to be the entry point of the Detective Bureau and the starting point for all reports submitted to the Los Santos Police Department.
