Crime Rate Falls Below Expected Numbers

Los Santos: The metropolitan crime rate has fallen significantly this fall, and currently appears to be about 33% below the expected rate based on previous years. Thus far, the month with the most reported arrests this year was August, with a total of 1566, and the number has been falling ever since, to 1109 in September and 817 in October. Based on projections from mid-month statistics, November is tracking to reach just over 800 arrests.

Officers of the Los Santos Police Department are required to file arrest reports to accompany every suspect they arrest. Through this, the Media Relations Division is able to collect data about the rate of crimes being committed. This data is gathered to keep track of trends in crime, often by comparing it to previous months and years, and is used to inform the public of what to look out for. This data is often released at the end of the year in the Year in Review.

While it is normal for the crime rate to peak in August and decline in the fall, the decline this year has been notably more significant than expected. For most of the year, including August, the crime rate has been around 5-10% above the same month in 2023. However, the number of arrests reported in September was 12% below 2023, October fell 36% below, and November is projected to end around 30% below the rate from 2023.

The reason for this fall is likely a combination of factors. Something that is certainly not a factor is officer employment or understaffing, as the LSPD hired more officers than it parted ways with the past 3 months. It is, however, natural for the crime rate to ebb and flow based on various factors, such as the current economic situation, spillover from outside situations, the evolution of gangs, and developments within the criminal underworld. For example, the crime rate in January was around 30% higher than that of last year. However, this slump in crime has had an unusually long duration, and speaks to the good work of Law Enforcement Officers to have overcome a rising crime rate. Ultimately, low criminal activity indicates that the risk of crime is not worth the reward, and effective law enforcement is a necessity to ensure that.
