Los Santos: On October 9th, 2024, the Los Santos Police Department (LSPD) announced an overhaul to its ride-along program eligibility requirements, aimed at promoting second chances. The adjustments include changes to the ride-along program’s eligibility criteria, particularly for individuals with prior criminal convictions. These changes give those who have demonstrated reformation a second chance to engage with law enforcement in a positive way. The program mirrors the state’s current firearms licensing guidelines, putting offenses into a list of categories by severity, and setting waiting periods before eligibility for the ride-along program is restored, with options for appeal in certain instances.
One such individual, who was previously ineligible for ride-alongs, is Alex Crail, a Paramedic and Supervisor with the Los Santos Emergency Medical Services (LSEMS). Alex Crail, who has a murder charge from 2018, has spent the past six years working diligently to turn his life around. After joining LSEMS in 2018, he has been on a path of personal and professional development, leading to his current supervisory position. Alex's commitment to bettering himself and serving our community is a powerful example of the potential for reform and growth.

In an interview with Alex Crail, who hopes to do a ride-along with the LSPD soon, he shared his thoughts and feelings about the change in policy:

Recent Adjustments to the LSPD Ride-Along Program

In an interview with Alex Crail, who hopes to do a ride-along with the LSPD soon, he shared his thoughts and feelings about the change in policy:
Chief of Police Elena Flores, along with her administration, spearheaded these adjustments. Chief Flores had the following statement regarding the changes:Paramedic Alex Crail wrote:With the recent changes of LSPDs newest ride along rules to allow ex-felons who have turned their life around and to prove that there is good in people who have done wrong, I am glad that I am able to see the side of LSPD that some may not see due to their prior actions, this is a huge stepping stone to people like me who have been convicted in the past and I hope hopefully more people can follow in my footsteps

Today, more individuals like Alex have the chance to participate in the LSPD ride-along program. These changes reflect a broader focus on rehabilitation and second chances, values that the LSPD and other government agencies throughout the state are committing to. The LSPD looks forward to seeing more success stories emerge as a result of the adjustments to the ride-along program and remains committed to providing opportunities for individuals who are working hard to rebuild their lives and make meaningful contributions to society.Chief of Police Elena Flores wrote: There are many defining moments in life, few can be as in the moment as a foolish decision as a young person or a mistake due to a feeling of powerlessness in one's personal situation and circumstances. While serious crimes exist and are frequently committed, many of the most common offenses are those that do not warrant difficulties for the rest of one's life.
The State has taken large strides to improve its rehabilitation process and how it expands into opportunities for those who have turned over a new leaf or have steered back onto the correct course. I am happy that the Police Department, under our administration, can take steps to partake in extending opportunities previously unavailable to those who have turned their life around or reintegrated into society.
Protecting and serving does not stop once the handcuffs come off and booking is complete. There's more to the job than that, these are humans who could have just as easily had a terrible day leading to a mistake costing them much more than freedom.
