Officer of the Month III+1 Cody James wrote:
How would you describe your responsibilities within the department?

In the role of Element Leader within D-Platoon of the METRO SWAT Division, I supervise, coordinate and develop the SWAT Officers and ensure they have a high level of operational readiness, accountability, and that their level of training meets the standard. In addition, I am a member of both the Firearms Licensing Division and the K9 Division.

What does wearing the badge mean to you?

Wearing the badge means everything to me. It represents responsibility, service, and trust to the community. It gives me the opportunity to help keep the city safe and to stand besides with some of the most dedicated and professional officers in the department. The badge is a reminder that our actions matter and that we are held to a higher standard.

What goals are you currently working toward within the department?

I want to keep growing as a leader for METRO SWAT while growing as an officer with my decision making and communication skills, as well as with my ability to provide guidance or mentorship to others. I hope to have a greater contribution to training and developing other officers. I want to be someone that both supervisors and officers can count on during high-stress situations.

What advice would you give to officers who are early in their careers?

If you're afraid to fail, then you're probably going to fail. Learning takes place through experience, and I have learned many things through the mistakes I have made as well as the mistakes made by others who mentored me into becoming the officer I am today. I recommend taking constructive criticism seriously, ask questions before doing anything, and trust your fellow officers and supervisors. We all want to see you succeed and will have your back throughout your career if you put in the effort.

And one last piece of advice, always remember… SWAT ON TOP!

What’s one thing you hope the public understands about the work officers do?

I hope the public understands that the job goes far beyond what is seen. This involves many hours of training, preparation, and making hard choices in dangerous and unpredictable situations where every single call is different and many difficult decisions need to be made based on very little information, while all the time trying to protect my life and's at the same time, to ensure that other people make it home safely. Being a police officer has a very demanding and is motivated by a exceptional level of commitment to provide service to protect the lives of others.

The Department finds it important to acknowledge the tireless efforts and unwavering dedication of our officers amidst their daily challenges and responsibilities.

Please join us in congratulating Officer Cody James on this prestigious award. We look forward to his continued success with the Los Santos Police Department.
