Safety Tips for Winter

Los Santos: With winter setting in definitively, and a City covered in a blanket of snow, the Los Santos Police Department urges its citizens to take extra precautions when outside, whether on the roads, sidewalks, or anywhere else outdoors, as well as at their own homes.
Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures may create a satisfying aesthetic or have an appeal of coziness, but they can also create dangerous conditions. Fortunately, with the right preparation and awareness, accidents, injuries, and other misfortunes can be minimized and prevented.
When operating a vehicle, please opt to heed the following winter driving tips provided for safety:
- Install winter tires on your vehicles, as they grip icy surfaces better than summer or all-season tires would.
- Remove snow and ice from your vehicle, such as by clearing the windows, mirrors, lights, and the roof of your vehicle; snow or ice left on your windows and mirrors may impair your vision and cause unsafe driving operations, whereas allowing snow and ice to remain on your vehicle may see it fly off while driving, which can endanger other drivers.
- Slow down the speeds at which you travel, and when near or behind another vehicle, increase your following distance; icy conditions and snow reduce the traction of your tires, meaning that your braking time increases. When braking, brake gently to avoid skidding; if your vehicle begins to slide, steer in the direction you want to go.
- Keep your headlights on during snow or fog to improve your and others' visibility on the road.
When you are a pedestrian or are generally spending time outdoors in these conditions, please take note of the following:
- Be careful and watch for ice on sidewalks, stairs, and driveways, as they can become slippery; walk slowly to avoid slipping, and wear proper footwear for the conditions.
- Dress appropriately to regulate your body temperature and protect exposed skin from frostbite; wear hats, gloves, and scarves. You are also advised to dress in (multiple) layers to retain your body heat and keep your clothes dry, as wet clothing increases the risk of hypothermia.
- Do not be afraid to ask for aid from police officers, as they are here to help and can assist you with emergency needs, medical calls, and connecting individuals to (other) emergency and government services.
We urge you to make use of the 911 emergency number for medical emergencies and dangerous conditions. Visit any police station or speak with an officer for further information or guidance on preparing yourself for the remainder of the winter season.
