Los Santos Impound Etiquette

Image

Los Santos: Located on Adam's Apple Boulevard, the Los Santos City Police Impound is a location frequented by many who have lost their vehicle which has since been recovered by police or have otherwise had their vehicle impounded by law enforcement or mechanics.

Due to the often frantic nature of the police impound due to an understandable frustration with potential waiting times, dependent on the time of day and general activity, it is imperative to practice proper etiquette when at the police impound.

Oftentimes, those who await the arrival of an officer to have their vehicle released back to their custody from the police impound drive a vehicle to the impound and leave it there, which obstructs the locations from where impounded vehicles are released. Vehicles left in these spaces, in which vehicles should not be parked, may be subject to impounding if the owner is not near and/or approachable to move the vehicle. To that end, it is highly advised to either walk to the police impound, get a ride from a friend, a colleague, a taxi, or a ride service, or park your vehicle of choice elsewhere.

Officers may frequently be in and out of the police impound when they are transferring a vehicle to the impound custodians; this is not indicative of a lack of willingness to help and aid those awaiting the release of their vehicle, much less an act of ignorance or an attempt at agitation, but is rather indicative of officers being assigned to a larger-scale situation where they have been assigned the duty of securing a vehicle and transporting it to the police impound.

More often than not, if they have taken note of your presence, they will make a return once they have been freed up. Those waiting are always welcome to approach officers acceptably and openly to request their presence at the police impound if they see an officer with a vehicle working the other side of the impound lot.

The supervisory staff of the Los Santos Police Department has been instructed to and has made a conscious effort to increase their watchfulness and mindfulness of the city impound, in an aim to ensure an adequate response to the impound lot is forthcoming from officers.

Los Santos City Police Impound Do's:
  • Get a ride to the police impound, reducing the number of vehicles left in the lot.
  • Ring the bell at the police impound, which notifies police of your presence.
  • Prepare your relevant documents and driver's license.
  • When approaching an officer at or about the police impound, do so in a respectful and polite manner.

Los Santos City Police Impound Don'ts:
  • Abandon or leave your vehicle in parking spaces within the confinements of the police impound; designated parking spaces may be an impounding location, a release location, or a cruiser space, and occupying any such spaces may hinder or obstruct the operations of both law enforcement and the impound location.
  • In a group, all approach an officer and show them your driver's license at once, demanding your vehicle be released; this is reductive and will more than likely result in a less favorable interaction, please extend officers the courtesy of behaving respectfully, they understand your frustration when you have waited for a longer period, but were more than likely not in control or in a position to tend to your needs before then.
  • Attempt to have your vehicle released while not in possession of a valid driver's license; your vehicle will not be released if your driver's license is revoked or suspended, even if you have a friend in attendance with you.
  • Place 911 calls with made-up information that are believed to bring police to the impound, such as by making false claims of an assault or weapon discharge at the police impound; this is prohibited by law and may result in prosecution on the grounds of NM08 and GM12.

To consolidate information, the previous excerpts have been included in articles previously published by the Media Relations Division:
The police impound, while accessible to the public to have their impounded vehicles released back into their possession, is a private police facility. Spaces within the confinements of the gates and walls of the police impound are strictly for the parking of police cruisers, temporary parking by residents to recover their vehicles, or for impounded vehicles.

Civilians are permitted a reasonable time frame to park their released vehicle and recover their other vehicle, collect their vehicle, or have their vehicle moved, however, to ensure operations of the police impound can continue unobstructed, vehicles left at the police impound may be impounded securely, resulting in having to recover the vehicle at a later time, albeit free of charge.
The Los Santos Police Department would like to remind citizens of the importance of patience and understanding when it comes to the impoundment of vehicles. While it may be frustrating to have your vehicle impounded, it is crucial to recognize the reasons behind the wait times and the consequences of misusing emergency hotlines for impound-related inquiries. When someone requests assistance at the impound lot, all on-duty officers are notified to respond efficiently to the needs of those present.

The following are essential steps for smooth and efficient use of the police impound:

  • Verify whether your driver's license is valid.
If it is indeed suspended, neither you nor your companion will be permitted to get your vehicle released.
Ensure your face is clearly visible so we can identify you against your license.
Position yourself in front of the booth where the impound bell is located, waiting patiently in a line.
Finally, ensure you have your driver's license ready to show the attending officer when prompted.
The wait times at our impound lot may be longer than usual in busy periods, but there is always a valid reason behind it. All officers have crucial daily tasks to handle, and although we always dispatch officers to address impound calls, there might be limited availability of units on occasion.

It is important to note that using emergency hotlines for non-emergencies, like requesting help at the impound lot, is strictly prohibited. Retrieving your vehicle from impound does not qualify as an emergency, and if this is taken advantage of, additional fees may apply in the form of citations and will not get you any closer to retrieving your vehicle.

The Los Santos Police Department continuously strives to improve the situation at the city police impound and understands that this is a two-way street. Important to note is that the Police Department is responsible only for the city impound lot located on Adam's Apple Boulevard in the City of Los Santos.
