LOVE IS IN THE AIR AT PALETO BAY
  • The movie *“The Fault in Our Stars”* gave us a quote that perfectly captures the magic of falling in love
“I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”

Isn’t that how it always happens? It starts with a spark—that playful banter, stolen glances, the way your heart skips a beat when you hear their voice on the radio to clock in. Then, before you know it, they have become your world. One day, you are just two people enjoying each other’s company in Buffalo, and the next, you can’t imagine life without them. And then comes that life-changing moment: the ring, the question, the “Yes” that changes everything!

Today, we want to celebrate that kind of love by highlighting two couples in the department who have lived this story. We sat down with them to hear how their journey unfolded, and trust us... you won’t want to miss it!

    JAMES AND NYLAH VALOR

The first couple we want to highlight is James and Nylah Valor. James is a hardened deputy who has been in almost every division and bureau and now finds himself as a supervisor within the department and the Investigator in Charge of our Gang and Narcotics Division. Nylah is just starting her career at the department, currently a Deputy Sheriff II with hopes and aspirations of joining SIB like her husband.

I was able to catch James and ask him some questions, and the answers we received show that "Valor" charm that made Nylah fall head over heels in love with him.

    Mason: How did you meet?
James: We met in a clothing store, and I was spittin' game while she was trying to change, resulting in a ride-along and her becoming wife #5.

    Mason: Who proposed to who?
James: I proposed to her (definitely not against my will).

Mason: Any favorite memories you two would like to share?
James: Probably our spontaneous marriage inside of Sandy Station at a random 10-1.

Mason: Can we expect any “Little Valors” soon?
    James: HUH????
    Nylah: At least five.

Mason: Any other comments you would like to share with the county?
James: This questionnaire turned into an argument, and I will be sleeping on the couch now. Thanks.

    TOM BROWN AND AMELIA CLARK

Our second couple could be considered “The Original” couple of the department.

Captain Clark has been a dedicated leader within the department, balancing a demanding career while maintaining strong relationships both personally and professionally. With a career built on commitment and resilience, we sat down with Captain Clark to learn more about their experiences and insights.

Kurt: How did you and Lieutenant Brown meet?
Captain Clark: Lieutenant Brown transferred from the Los Santos Police Department in June 2022. I was already with the department, so we ended up patrolling together for hours on end. We both joined the K9 Division and supported each other through our goals and achievements.

Kurt: What’s one thing you admire about each other?
Captain Clark: Lieutenant Brown is an incredibly calm and supportive person. No matter how chaotic things get, I know I can count on him to have my back while also giving me the space to be myself.

Kurt: Do you have any advice for building a strong professional relationship?
Captain Clark: We both started at similar ranks, which helped us form a solid foundation of mutual respect. As we moved up in our careers, we maintained open communication and supported each other through different challenges. Outside of work, we make sure to set boundaries—our personal time isn’t always about the job. That balance helps keep our professional relationship strong.

Kurt: What do you enjoy most about working together?
Captain Clark: We understand each other's roles and responsibilities, which makes working together smooth and efficient. Having that level of trust makes everything easier on duty.

Kurt: What’s one thing you’ve accomplished together that you’re proud of?
Captain Clark: Joining the K9 Division together and going through training with our dogs was a huge accomplishment. It was a learning experience for all four of us, and it’s something I’ll always be proud of.

Kurt: Do you have any shared interests or hobbies outside of work?
Captain Clark: We both love spending time with our K9s, whether it’s training, going on hikes, or just playing with them. They’re a huge part of our lives, both on and off duty.

Kurt: How do you usually communicate or stay in touch?
Captain Clark: Since we live together, we see each other every day. It’s a pretty standard domestic relationship in that sense.

THIS VALENTINE'S DAY, MY ONLY ARREST IS YOUR HEART

We went around asking deputies about their Valentine’s Day plans, and let’s just say—some of their answers might make you blush!

Commander Noah Carlile: I got three baby mommas, and I'll be checking in on them and seeing what they're doing... or something like that.

Deputy Sheriff Trainee Jimmy Casteel: I have no specific plans, I'll be enjoying time with friends.

Sergeant Clay Thompson: Sometimes I wish god made me a gay cause it'd be so much easier with the homies

Investigator I (SIT) Louise Hoffman: To get drunk alone and watch Bridget Jones’s Diary.

Commander John Kemp: I plan on bathing my goats

Captain Dante Archer: I don't give a shit about Valentine's Day, with all due respect.

Corporal Gankis Gankiunaitis: To find a wife.

Deputy Sheriff I Madden Miller: Taking my girl out, going on a date, probably getting a hotel room with a nice hot tub.

We hope everyone appreciates this special departure from our usual press releases.

At the Sheriff’s Information Division, our mission is not only to keep the public informed about our ever-changing landscape but also to remind them that our deputies are human. Behind every badge is a person who deserves to go home safely at the end of their shift.

In a county where some individuals sustain their lives through criminal enterprises, deputies are not always seen as protectors—but as adversaries. Our goal with these press releases is to humanize the badge and, perhaps, make someone think twice before taking a deputy’s life.
