The Arrest of a Department of Corrections Employee

Los Santos: On May 20, 2023, during a government press conference, an altercation occurred between a security officer and a civilian aggressor. While security officers, having their tasers drawn, were attempting to detain another individual, the aggressor demanded that the individual be left alone and struck the security officer in the head. Immediately after striking the security officer, the aggressor was shot by an employee of the San Andreas Department of Corrections using a high powered rifle from a distance, while simultaneously being tased by one of the security officers.

Because the incident occurred within its jurisdiction, the Los Santos Police Department's Detective Bureau opened an investigation into the shooting. Investigators gathered statements and recordings from Officers involved in the event. After consulting with the Attorney General, a warrant was filed to obtain the body camera recording of the individual handling the high powered rifle. The warrant was approved and executed and DB executed the warrant.

Based on the information gathered during the investigation, Investigators and the Attorney General agreed that the use of the rifle during the altercation was an excessive use of force and constituted Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The reasoning for this conclusion was in part that there were multiple security officers on the ground who were better equipped to handle the level of force at play. The aggressor did not use a deadly weapon and would likely have been incapacitated just as quickly by the other security officer's taser. However, as it was determined that the shot was intended to incapacitate, not to kill, it was decided not to pursue a charge of a higher degree. As such, the charge of WF01 - Assault with a Deadly Weapon was filed against the individual.

On June 3, while the individual was on shift, a delegation was sent to the DOC to handle the arrest. A meeting was arranged with the DOC leadership, and the individual was informed of the warrant against them. The DOC contested the decision, but after a discussion involving a Governor of the State of San Andreas, the LSPD decided to press on with the charges. The suspect was placed under arrest by an LSPD Officer, after which they were handed over to the DOC who processed them under the supervision of the LSPD in a segregated area, away from the general prison population unit.

Later on that same night, the San Andreas State Government decided to pardon the individual for the crime of Assault with a Deadly Weapon. This does not mean that the crime did not occur, but that any consequences are annulled.

The purpose of this article is to clarify the details surrounding this case. The LSPD works side by side with the DOC as colleagues, and has great respect for the work they do. The LSPD simultaneously has a duty to uphold the law of the State of San Andreas equally for everyone, without exception or bias. The LSPD can only comment on details related to the police investigation and arrest, and the DOC has asked that any questions be directed to the San Andreas State Government. The individual's name and rank has been deliberately withheld due to their ongoing, active role within the Department of Corrections, as such information may, after the pardon, be considered detrimental to the individual's performance in that role, and negatively impact the relationship between the Los Santos Police Department and the Department of Corrections.
