- LOS SANTOS COUNTY, MAY 10TH, 2023 - As Sheriff of the Los Santos County Sheriff's Department, I want to assure the public that we hold ourselves to the highest standards of professionalism and accountability. We take any allegations of misconduct or excessive use of force extremely seriously, and we will not tolerate any behavior that violates the trust that the community has placed in us.
We understand the importance of transparency in maintaining the trust of the community, which is why we are taking the step of publicly announcing the charges against Investigator Marco Rivera and his subsequent termination from the department. We believe that the public has a right to know when one of our own is accused of misconduct, and we want to be as open and transparent as possible about this incident.
In the evening of May 3rd, Investigator Marco Rivera was carrying out his duties in the cell block of the Department of Corrections. While attempting to transfer an inmate to the med bay, another inmate unexpectedly rushed towards him and punched him once before retreating.
In an apparent fit of anger, Investigator Rivera responded by drawing his department-issued Sub Machine Gun and firing multiple rounds at the retreating inmate, causing them to suffer critical injuries. This behavior clearly violated several departmental policies, including our Use of Force Policy, which specifies the appropriate circumstances for the use of deadly force.
As a result of the investigation that followed, in collaboration with the Attorney General, Investigator Rivera was charged with Attempted Murder and subsequently terminated from the department.
We want to emphasize that this incident does not reflect the values or actions of the vast majority of our hardworking and dedicated employees who serve the community with honor and distinction every day. We remain committed to providing the highest level of public safety services to the citizens of Los Santos County and to upholding the trust that the community has placed in us.
