  • The addition of the K9 Detection Team has led to many positive changes across Patrol Operations and safety within the county overall. The K9 Detection Team is a small group of expertly specialized canine handlers that can be useful in many scenarios. A few examples of this may include conducting detection practices on the field when warranted and needed. Searching for lost or missing members of the community or sometimes they may also find themselves responding to requested pre-planned events for event security.

Due to the rigorous training phase and time needed to commit to the division, the expert team of K9 Handlers is kept to a low amount. Currently the Sheriff’s Department has 9 total K9 Handler’s, varying in rank and training. Some which have months of training and others which have just been selected and conducting their first week of training. The K9 Detection Team has been utilised in numerous ways and blends in very well with other divisions in the Department. Two of these divisions include the Special Enforcement Detail and the Highway Enforcement Division. The Special Enforcement details comes across numerous raids and terrorist threats weekly and sometimes having a K9 can result in a much smoother operation. The Highway Enforcement Division utilised K9 in the past during joint-operations where checkpoints are conducted and Open-Air Sniffs are utilised to help find hidden contraband.

The Sheriff Department’s K9 Detection Team launched in May 2022 where the first month began mostly with Command members training and assessing the newly brought in recruits. Everything went well and everyone completed their training with flying colours, advancing to the next stage in the division and being able to patrol normally with their K9. As the months went on more and more was added to the division to help improve the structure. K9 Academies were introduced to help communication between trainees and instructors, began K9 BLS training to help prepare for all situations that may happen on the field and more to come in the upcoming future.

Words from K9 Command Noah Carlile:
As rigorous and thorough as the training is, we still do ask the public to make sure that they DO NOT interact with the K9s. These K9s are here to help deputies in their day-to-day tasks, making for a better and more efficient patrol. Attempting to distract the K9 is not only interference with the patrols but also could lead to citations or charges. We are here to protect and serve, as there are active scenes, let our K9s do the same and we promise to continue protecting the county and the state.
