"TO PROTECT AND SERVE"

  • In our latest press release, entitled New At This, we're looking at employees within the department that have recently taken on a new role or responsibility within the department. We deep dive into what they are doing in that role, what got them there and where they see their future in the department.

    Media Relations Officer Gina Willow reached out to Police Commander Elizabeth Sanchez and Police Officer III+1 Leo Larson to get their views on their new roles.

    "NOT NEW TO COMMAND BUT A NEW COMMAND"
    On July 10th, the decision was made by the General Operations Bureau in conjunction with the other STAFF Officers to promote then Police Captain III Elizabeth Sanchez to the rank of Police Commander and also, to assign her as the Police Commander of the General Operations Bureau.

    Commander Sanchez has been with the department since the 23rd of May, 2019. She completed her Field Training Program a month later on the 26th of June. She was promoted into the LSPD Supervisory Team in November 2019 and then the LSPD Command Team in March 2021. She is the current Commanding Officer of the Vespucci Patrol Division and previously, she also had a long stint as the Assistant Commanding Officer of the Field Training Division.

    When interviewed by Media Relations Officer Gina Willow, Elizabeth Sanchez explained that her role has not changed to date but her rank authority had increased somewhat. Her daily duties include responding to discussions, attending meetings as well as completing different types of paperwork that is required to help the department run smoothly.

    Commander Sanchez has never been aggressively ambitious when it comes to her role within the department but she has achieved great things by being extremely consistent and reliable. In a department that is currently changing and evolving, such characteristics can easily be overlooked but it is resolute professionals such as Commander Sanchez that form the backbone of the LSPD and allow us to do the work we do, to the level we do it.

    She admitted that when she joined the Supervisory team, she struggled at first with self-doubt and anxiety over the responsibilities she was now tasked with, as some officers can when presented with a new challenge. It is a testament to her character and her honesty as a person that she can be so candid about her initial struggles but in spite of that, she grew into her role and flourished.

    Commander Sanchez is understandably happy and proud of what she has achieved. While she has never been driven by advancements with the department, you get the feeling from looking at her career to date, that she will continue to rise in the future.

    We caught up with Deputy Chief Phillipe Sanchez and he had this to say about Commander Sanchez's appointment;
    Choosing Elizabeth to become the Commander of General Operations was an obvious choice for me. Although she had delved into specialist divisions within Special Operations, her heart was always with General Operations. Her dedication to the Bureau, her consistency and outstanding leadership is what made the decision simple for me. Since her assignment as Commander, she has been a valuable asset.
    "A NEW SUPERVISOR, A NEW HOPE"
    On the 24th of July, Officer Larson was selected from a number of applicants to begin his training in the LSPD Supervisor Training Program. Officer Larson joined the department on the 14th of July, 2020 before returning to the department for a second stint of employment in 2021. He graduated from the Field Training Program in February 2021 and in March 2021, he joined the Vinewood Traffic Division. Officer Larson then returned for a third and final stint with the department in late 2021, re-joining the Vinewood Traffic Division where he currently is conducting his supervisory training for.

    Officer Larson is just starting out on his journey as a Supervisor in Training but already is relishing the opportunity to assist the department in new and more significant ways. Larson is seemingly driven by his desire to assist the department as much as possible and the role of a supervisor is going to afford him that opportunity.

    He admitted that becoming a Supervisor wasn't initially a goal of his but as he spent more time within the department and got involved with a number of divisions, he began to realise that he could perhaps offer something extra as a supervisor. As an officer, you can only do so much but as a supervisor, there are a plethora of opportunities not just to be part of a change but to make it happen. As a new Supervisor, he is expected to throw himself into the role. This means handling all sorts of requests but also, maintaining control and providing clear and concise direction in high-stress tactical situations.

    As for the future, Officer Larson isn't looking too far beyond just completing the Supervisor Training Program which epitomizes how he has conducted himself to date. Focusing on what is directly in front of him and trying to make the best of it. He has an interest in getting involved again in the Air Support Division but for now, it's all about getting to Police Sergeant and learning how to lead when he's spent so much time following.

    The LSPD Command Team began discussing the possibility of Officer Larson joining the team on the 4th of July. What became apparent from a statistical point of view was that Officer Larson was heavily involved in the administrative side of the department, both in his role within the Recruitment & Employment Division but also, the amount of Duty and Patrol reports that Officer Larson filed. He made a significant contribution to the Field Training Division, receiving Field Training Officer of the Month for a department record three times in a row for the months of February, March and April.
