  • Lovely denizens of Los Santos County, recently, you may have seen convoys of white trucks, and if you hadn't seen them, then perhaps you have seen the unfortunate accidents that have long plagued our county.

The San Andreas Board of Commissioners have allocated a sizable fund towards the Public Works Department, allowing them to hire new employees and procure new vehicles and equipment for their fleet. They sport the same vibrant yellow reflective vests that our Highway Enforcement Deputies do, and for good reason.

Most of the work that the Public Works employees will be conducting in our county, is roadside. What does this mean for the standard member of the public? It means that you should approach with caution when you see the orange blockades set up, and yield the right of way to oncoming traffic if you're forced to merge into the oncoming lane.

For the lovely individuals who find themselves under the employ of the Public Works Department, the Sheriff's Department would like to welcome you to the fray with a small reminder.

The State Government has entrusted you with the immense responsibility of keeping our roads, and our beautiful state safe from accidents, be they natural or man-made. Although you are granted the responsibility to divert the flow of traffic and close off entire laneways should it be required for the safety of those around you, and those approaching your worksites, you are still bound by the rules and regulations of the road when you are both on the job site, and on your way to the site.

What does this mean specifically? Firstly, it means keeping to your designated lane of traffic and operating your vehicles in a safe manner while on the road. No sudden U-Turns or cutting over lanes of traffic unless the road indicators permit as such.

It doesn't end with you exiting the vehicle. When you exit the vehicle and you are performing your work on the roads, make sure that you are wearing your reflective vest, and that you're not going into the lane of traffic unnecessarily. This also means no taking shortcuts to get back to your job site if you do find yourself on the wrong side of the road.

Anyone found violating traffic laws will be charged accordingly. In addition, the recently formed Public Works union has no legal permission to interfere with a traffic stop and/or investigation. As always, if a law enforcement official asks you to vacate a scene, you should listen to them or be faced with a failure to comply charge.

Safety on the roadway is a burden all of us must carry, but being able to momentarily dictate the flow of traffic does not mean that you get to ignore the burden either.
