  • Defending oneself can be a slippery slope if not following the law to the exact wording of it.

The topic of self-defense is unfortunately one that usually lands people without a solid reason, a trip to the Mission Row or Paleto Bay jail cells. Why should you, a fully capable and intelligent person, be subject to such an experience after having been put in a situation where you felt your life or property was at risk?

The short answer is: You shouldn't.

Self Defense falls into 3 large categories. These are deterrence, incapacitation, and lethal.
We'll go over each category of self-defense one by one here.

    Deterrence
Self-defense with the intent to deter would-be assailants or other threats around you is meant to show that you won't be subjecting yourself to the whims of those who would harm you. It is the first step in the escalation of self-defense and the most passive of the three options. Usually, deterrence comes in the form of using your words, simply stating "No" or "Stop" or the threat of having law enforcement or security involvement will be enough to scare away small-time criminals, however, should they persist, an acceptable alternative that could fall under deterrence is pushing or shoving the individual away from yourself or your property. If the person causing you grief is smart enough, they'll realize that you're willing to get physical, and they'll back off.

Should these previous things fail to have an effect, you can move onto the next category of self-defense. That being incapacitation.

    Incapacitation
Self-defense with the intent to incapacitate is when you wish for a threat to you or your surroundings to cease while keeping in mind that the individual showing such threats, is alive and most likely isn't trying to hurt you in any lasting way. The preferable means of incapacitation are with your fists, as they have the least capacity to inflict life-changing injuries such as severe bleeding or loss of motor function. If you find that your fists won't be suitable, you may use blunt objects such as a golf club, or a baseball bat, as once again, there is a lower chance of you inflicting any serious damage to the life or limbs of your aggressor. Sharp objects such as knives, broken bottles, or, in the right circumstances, crowbars, are nearly never acceptable to be used in an incapacitating capacity as they can kill without the common person being aware of what they're doing.

Should your aggressor still be kicking around, and proving to be a threat, more so now that you've attempted to incapacitate them, you may employ the use of lethal self-defense options.

    Lethal Self-Defense
Lethal self-defense is reserved for ONLY the direst situations where your life or another individual's life is in clear and present danger. Property is not included in this for the reason that property can be replaced, however, life cannot.

Once again, using sharp objects such as knives or broken bottles, is unacceptable, even when used for lethal self-defense. We want to provide the best chance at survival for the aggressor, not only so that they may live to see another day, but also so that justice can be brought upon them. Every life is precious, and every life has meaning. Some may stray from the path temporarily, but that's what the Department of Corrections is there for. To set those who have done wrong, back on the right path.

Self-defense is like a ladder, and the categories previously mentioned, are the rungs of the ladder. Take the steps necessary to protect you, your loved ones, and your property. Just remember, use caution and use your head when doing so.
