Los Santos: On the evening of March 13th, the Los Santos Police Department bestowed the Police Life Saving Medal on two of the Department's employees. This medal serves as an award for bravery, usually awarded to officers for taking action to rescue or attempt the rescue of either a fellow officer or any person from imminent danger.
Bestowed upon Police Detective I Zero Hunter and Public Relations Specialist Ally Jean for their heroic and brave actions, the medal was given to them by Deputy Chief Jaxon Nash, joined by Chief of Police Elena Flores, through a ceremony hosted at the Mission Row Station.
On March 10th, a large situation occurred late into the night involving the Los Santos County Sheriff's Department and a small element of a criminal organization. After an unsuccessful pursuit concluded, a small-scale shootout happened between Sheriff's Deputies and confirmed gang members, who fled the scene with heavy weaponry on their person.
Once located again, the Sheriff's Deputies engaged in a vehicle pursuit, which led them directly into a premeditated ambush, set up to bring the vehicle pursuit to a violent end. During this time, Detective Hunter and Ms. Jean were partaking in a ride-along with the Sheriff's Department.
The ambush resulted in the injury and subsequent deaths of ten to twelve Sheriff's Deputies, as reported by a member of their Sheriff's Investigations Bureau in their commendation submitted to the Los Santos Police Department. Throughout this, the two LSPD employees were put in a dangerous situation that posed a significant threat to their wellbeing and life, without any gear that would aid them or improve their survivability. Against all odds and despite the threat to their own life, they went out of their way to put themselves back in the dangerous situation in an effort to rescue who they could, resulting in the safe recovery of an investigator assigned to the Sheriff's Department's Gang and Narcotics Division.
The investigator in question, Investigator Bunkie Johnson, wrote the following:
This incident and these actions not only highlight the danger that law enforcement officers of LSPD and LSSD face on a day-to-day basis with the ever-increasing gang- and weapon-related crime but also the importance of law enforcement agencies and officers having each other's backs.
A brief statement was provided by Chief Elena Flores on the issuance of a police medal for off-duty conduct.
While this press release is ceremonial and celebratory in nature, we wish to take this moment and opportunity to highlight the losses experienced by not only the Los Santos County Sheriff's Department that night but also the families who have suffered an unimaginable loss at the hands of these criminals.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families, both blood and work, of the deputies who made the ultimate sacrifice that night after selflessly serving their communities.

Investigator I Bunkie Johnson wrote:"During a massive [...] situation, where unfortunately 10-12 Sheriff's Deputies died, off duty Z. Hunter and A. Jean put their lives in danger to save myself, Inv. Johnson, from the shootout scene. I was the only living deputy from this specific scene thanks to these two. They helped me to a vehicle, while gunfire was ringing out all around them. Their courage and determination even off duty, is something truly admirable." [...] "I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for those two courageous PD officers."
This incident and these actions not only highlight the danger that law enforcement officers of LSPD and LSSD face on a day-to-day basis with the ever-increasing gang- and weapon-related crime but also the importance of law enforcement agencies and officers having each other's backs.

Chief Elena Flores wrote: To borrow from the words of Captain Steel during our brief deliberations on the issuance of this medal, bestowing a medal for off-duty conduct is relatively unorthodox, as this is the first documented occurrence of it happening. That said, we believe that meritorious actions need to be met and encouraged with positive enforcement.
Detective Hunter and Ms. Jean saved a life, and that action is not one to be downplayed or brushed off. Thanks to their heroic actions and bravery, an investigator made it out of a near-death incident and was able to return home that day.
Not to minimize the courage and heroism displayed by Detective Hunter, but I wish to reaffirm how proud I am of the actions displayed that night, especially by Ms. Jean, as she is a civilian employee of the Los Santos Police Department, performing community-oriented and administrative tasks, and has no experience serving in a law enforcement capacity, and has received no proper Department training. Yet, she did not hesitate in the face of danger to risk making the biggest sacrifice anyone can make, to bring another person to safety.
Both these employees have made the Los Santos Police Department proud and have truly driven home what our employees stand for.
