Message from the Chief Justice
- Citizens of San Andreas,
Chief Justice Judith Mason
Where the month of June brought significant hardship to the Judicial Branch with major changes in personnel, the month of July has brought new life and invigoration into our court system. With almost two dozen cases being archived for various reasons this past month, we have finally reached a place where we have more active cases within the Superior Court than we have cases still waiting in our backlog.
While some of this is the result of defendants failing to maintain reasonable contact with the court while their case was pending activation, this large reduction of the backlog is also the result of plea agreements, utilization of prosecutorial discretion, and the diligent work of all of our staff, be that paralegals, defense attorneys, prosecuting attorneys, and judges working on each of these cases.
We have also introduced a new alternative trial format as a way for cases involving minor to moderate charges to be resolved entirely on the public docket rather than adding in another bottleneck of scheduling an in-person trial. For the time being, a good number of cases will be eligible for this type of trial, however, major cases involving serious felonies or cases which may have a major impact on case law within the state will still require an in-person trial. More details about this system can be found within our most recent press release.
As we move forward into the next month, we will continue to make changes to the court system to make it that much more clear and accessible to general public as we advance on our long-term goals of quick case turnaround, and eventually, the opening of Civil Court.
