An Open Letter To Weazel News

Los Santos: After the publishing of the most recent edition of the Weazel News newsletter on the 5th of June, I find it necessary to issue the following statement regarding the edition and the accusations made publicly against Police Sergeant II Mike Luigi.

First and foremost, the Los Santos Police Department takes the upholding of the law extremely seriously and holds all it's employees to an unimpeachable standard. In situations where individuals have let themselves, the department and the city down, they have been dealt with in accordance with the law and our own internal disciplinary procedures. This could be anything from a formal warning up to and including, termination. Our suspensions and terminations are public knowledge so that we can be transparent in how we handle these matters where appropriate. We do not consider this a public right but simply a desire from us, to be open and honest with the city we serve.

That is what makes this attempted character assassination from Weazel News all that more disappointing. As the number one law enforcement entity in San Andreas, we have a sworn duty to act upon fact and in accordance with the Penal Code. We do not have the luxury of hindsight and must simply act earnestly with what we have available to us, at that particular time.

It would be incredibly inappropriate and counter-productive to use a public forum to debate the validity of charges placed by LSPD Officers. We have an Internal Affairs Division for internal review of decisions our Officers take and additionally, we have the Judicial Branch for external review. The LSPD will not be attendees to the court of public opinion.

There was no quote included by Sergeant Luigi in this publication, either by himself or on his behalf by this department. There was no request of either party for Sergeant Luigi's point of view to be included. The reasoning for this is abundantly clear. Weazel News now resorts to one-sided gutter journalism, with one simple and irresponsible goal in mind, to simply sell newspapers by any means necessary.

Putting forward a fair and balanced account of what actually happened, doesn't quite titillate those with an anti-cop sentiment in the State but a sensationalistic fictional account of officer misconduct is no doubt, a real page turner. The fact that the penal code was amended after the fact tells you that Sergeant Luigi proceeded in a correct manner, according to the Penal Code at that time but Governor Langley after the incident made the revision to discount any further instances of this occurring for Weazel.

A move that in some circles has been seen akin to the decision taken by former Police Commissioner Ramon Carter to alter the Penal Code regarding Face Concealment and issue the now redacted, Press Release 33, because how the law was at the time did not fit how he felt it should be. While this most recent change was made above board, it was again, after Sergeant Luigi had already moved to act, not before, so judging his actions publicly on something that was changed after he had acted does not make any sense.

Weazel News has unfortunately found themselves the victims of harassment by a number of individuals in recent times and every time that they have needed assistance, we have responded and dealt with the matter in a timely fashion. The LSPD does not discriminate nor does it pick the truth that is most convenient or most entertaining. We simply act, based on the facts available to us and to the best of our ability.

I'd also like to state for the record that Sergeant Luigi has to date, continually conducted himself with the upmost professionalism throughout his time with us. He is consistently thorough in his enforcement of the law, which makes him an unpopular figure amongst law breakers and to date, has been an exemplary employee of the Los Santos Police Department and an embodiment of the values we hold dear.

While the Los Santos Police Department has a zero tolerance policy for malfeasance from any of it's employees, until such time as any allegations of wrongdoing could be proved against Sergeant Luigi, he has our unequivocal support in his continued duties with the department and that same support is given to any of our employees that simply wish to serve and protect their city.

I urge Weazel News in future to be more responsible with their reporting but as this is not the first time they have made baseless accusations against this department, I do not imagine the future will look any different.

Sincerely,
Deputy Chief Dezzy Bala
Commanding Officer, Administrative Services Bureau

(( The following has been removed from the public release, as the referenced situation has been voided by server administration:

"Regarding the other article concerning Mr. James Cobb, we will not be issuing any further comment at this time due to the sensitive nature of the allegations, except to say that Mr. Cobb was given advice by the Los Santos Police Department over four months ago regarding the option of obtaining a restraining order if Mr. Cobb felt his life was in danger but no such request was ever made or approved by the Judicial Branch." ))
