Media Relations Division Restructuring

Los Santos: The Media Relations Division has undergone a gradual restructuring during the past few months, and as the most public-facing division, we find it important that the public is kept up to date. There are also some minor changes to how various members of the public can interact with the division going forward.

The division's command team has changed, with the resignation of the Officer-in-Charge of the Community Relations Unit, Police Lieutenant Alex Schill, and the Commanding Officer of the division, retired Police Captain Tim Havlicek. Following this, Police Detective Isabella Cavallera was appointed as Commanding Officer.

With the coming resignation of the Officer-in-Charge of the Community Relations Unit and the incoming promotion of the Officer-in-Charge of the Media Relations Unit, it was decided by the command team at the time that it was time to restructure the division. The Media Relations Division is a small division, and it is expected that better utilization of our limited manpower can be achieved by dividing our work into roles, rather than who is being served. When the two units were created, there were many ideas in store for the new Community Relations Unit, but recently only a few programs remained fruitful, and in practice, the work performed by in both units was work that could be performed just as well without the added division.

Now, the Media Relations Division is staffed by Public Information Officers (henceforth PIOs) all working together, but with a variety of roles. PIOs are given the option to choose roles that indicate what aspect of the division's work they want to perform. This structure of various "roles" is much more flexible than the two-unit structure since it allows more roles for PIOs to more specifically choose what they are best at working with, without adding an extra administrative layer. Furthermore, these roles apply to public relations as a whole, rather than just media- or community relations, meaning the same PIO can perform the same work for both duties.

We are currently working on integrating the duties of both units into the duties of all members of the Media Relations Division. We aim to maintain the successful community outreach initiatives we have developed through the Community Relations Division while stepping up the release of information to the public, as the core goal of the division has always been. The restructuring just means that there are no longer separate officers for the community and media; both will be interacting with the same PIOs. However, as the duty of serving the community and the media is very similar in practice, we expect that we will be able to maintain the same level of service to the community that we have had thus far.

Additionally, a new format has been developed to be used for all public releases. What was previously referred to as "Press Releases" and "Public Service Announcements" will now both use this format. The contact information is listed at the bottom of the format. Public Inquiries remain the preferred way to obtain information, but there is now also an email open. However, this account is not monitored regularly, so response times will be longer than through Public Inquiries.

We look forward to serving you.
