MESSAGE FROM THE SHERIFF

  • Image
    Undersheriff Bobby Kirk
January has been hectic for the Los Santos County Sheriff's Department, we've not only reached a new record number of employees thanks to our Recruitment and Employment Division, but we've also, as most of the public should know by now, opened the Sheriff's Investigations Bureau which has been a great success so far.

As we mentioned in our press release for its opening, the bureau has plans to evolve and expand to offer the county more specialized services, but at the moment, the leadership of the Bureau and its Divisions are in full focus on managing the interest from our deputies, as well as training any deputies that have been accepted into the bureau. So rest assured, we're eager to see what February and the upcoming months have in store for the bureau.

Executive Staff is also very pleased with the new interest in our Detention and Parole Bureau from our deputies, and we hope that it will continue as the Bureau has been down quite low towards the end of last year. As our statistics will show, January has been a very active month for our parole deputies as there has been a significant increase in parolees, both active, failed and passed. We're pleased with the effort that the new Commanding Officer has shown these past few weeks, and we're confident that Senior Agent Toni Salatoni will continue his hard work with the bureau.

Other than that, the Sheriff's Department has no current plans to enact any major changes in February, we will as always monitor day-to-day operations and adapt any necessary changes as issues arise. We just hope for a prosperous but calm February.

DEPUTY OF THE MONTH
  • Image
    Deputy Sheriff III Bert Martin
    Image

Over the last month, Deputy Sheriff III Bert Martin has left his mark as a remarkable colleague to work with, deservedly being named the Deputy of the Month in a poll between supervisory, command, and executive staff. Deputy Martin has been in our Department for a long time now. He initially joined LSSD in August of 2021 and resigned in October of the same year to enlist to the United States Airforce and serve our glorious nation. He was re-instated back in December of 2021 after the end of his deployment, and ever since then, he has been an integral cog in our crime-stopping machine.

Bert Martin is known for his outstanding professionalism, patience, and willingness to serve. As part of North Patrol, he has participated in many operations as a GOB unit and a recently appointed DPB Parole Deputy. As a supervisor, I have witnessed first-hand the Deputy's work ethos, as he is always first to offer himself for tasks no matter how dull they may be, a trait rare nowadays. Additionally, Martin has shown great patience, as shown by the many hours spent with Deputy Sheriff Trainees in Sierra patrols, something precious towards the future of our Department.

We will be watching as the deputy progresses in our ranks and showcases our department's motto. "A Tradition of Service". A bonus payment of $100,000 will be given to the Deputy as a reward for his performance.

STORY OF THE MONTH
LATE NIGHT RELAXATION IN THE FIELD

Image
  • The Los Santos County Sheriff's Department prides itself in the strong camaraderie that has existed among its department employees since it was created. Our camaraderie is something that is continuously strengthened as more and more employees enter our department. As leaders, we believe it's our camaraderie that allows our supervisors to have such a strong connection with our employees and is also one of the reasons why corrective action functions so well, and rarely needs to be taken in the department.

On the 18th of January, 2022, at around 03:00; after a busy couple of hours with numerous pursuits, arrests, and even shootouts; Undersheriff Kirk and Deputy Sheriff III Timothee Olsen called for a "time-out". With the support of Captain Tyrone Balakay, who on top of being a hardworking employee of the department, also owns his own convenience store, DancingDisco, the three set out to hold a special roll-call at the parking lot of DancingDisco.

Captain Balakay set up tents and tables, with free food directly from his store's inventory, which was all given to our deputies on the shift that had arrived. However, the main event with the roll-call was yoga, something for which Deputy Olsen was an advocate of.

Gathered in a circle, Deputy Olsen led deputies in some calming yoga poses. These poses helped to calm down deputies and disperse any adrenaline that was leftover from the previous situations. This roll-call was also a great way for the department to connect with the public, as it wasn't done behind closed doors, and in fact, a member of the public did show up and attend the yoga session at the end of the roll-call, which demonstrated the success of it. After the yoga was done, the deputies were sent back on patrol: refreshed and calm.

The Sheriff's Department will always continue to experiment with different ways of improving the quality of life for our deputies in the field, and we'll strive to involve our communities as much as we can. This is just one example of how the Los Santos Sheriff's Department takes care of its employees and ensures that every deputy is physically and mentally able to deal with situations that arise.

DEPUTY SPOTLIGHT

  • Image
This month we are pleased to announce that our deputy spotlight goes to Deputy Sheriff Trainee Brayton Williams! Although recently graduating from the Sheriff's Academy, Trainee Williams has demonstrated a great work ethic and diligent work in the field! He has been a great example of the attitude we want all new trainees to bring to the department.

As a Trainee, Brayton is a good example of the values our department stands for. In general, Trainee Williams can be described as a hard-working department member we are proud to have. The trainee only joined the department after finishing his academy on January 20th, 2022. Most recently Trainee Williams has finished all of his field training sessions including his evaluation, which he passed with flying colors. He has certainly made a great impression with everyone boasting nearly 50 pieces of paperwork completed to date.

The Sheriff's Information Division reached out to Trainee Williams to get a greater insight into him as a person and for the public to get to know him better.
How long have you been serving in the Sheriff's Department?
I have been serving in the Sheriff's Department now for just over 2 weeks now!

What is your most memorable moment while serving as a deputy for the LSSD?
It would have to be my first arrest. Having the chance to finally read someone their rights and do the tasks related to that was a big moment for me as a trainee.

What is the greatest feeling about being a deputy?
Growing up, I had a rough childhood, living in a rough neighborhood, and now I have been presented with the opportunity being able to bring that experience into Law Enforcement. This enables me to be able to contribute towards the betterment of the communities in Los Santos County, as my living experience has allowed me to get a better understanding of the social aspects of the troubled neighborhoods and adapt to the environment better.

What is your favorite thing about being a deputy at the LSSD?
Being able to protect and serve the great people of the County. Also serving alongside the great Men and Women of the department.

What does the Sheriff's Department motto, "A Tradition of Service," mean to you?
It means a lot. I have a reputation to uphold, not only of myself and the department but the former Men and Women who served the Sheriff's Department and protected the county. It's also a guideline, to keep the tradition of high service and a good community connection alive.

MONTHLY STATISTICS

Image
DIVISION SPOTLIGHT

  • Image
    Commander John Kemp
    Commanding Officer of SIB
The Los Santos Sheriff's Department started off 2022 with an exciting new addition, that being the Sheriff's Investigations Bureau. For some time the Sheriff's Department did not have any investigation units and had to rely on the Police Department Detectives. Now the Sheriff's Department has Investigators to manage crime scenes, uncover evidence and utilize techniques to aid in the reduction of criminal activity.

The Sheriff’s Investigations Bureau is the vehicle through which the Los Santos County Sheriff's Department addresses the violent crime plaguing the state of San Andreas. The Sheriff's Investigation Bureau administers multiple Violent Crime Task Forces through two inner divisions, Investigations and Intelligence. These task forces pursue violent crime through sustained, proactive, coordinated investigations to obtain prosecutions on violations such as racketeering, drug conspiracy, and firearms violations. The Sheriff’s Investigations Bureau concept expands cooperation and communication among the entire Los Santos Sheriff's Department to offer vital information, increasing productivity and safety for all members of law enforcement.

The new bureau currently has six members within their employment, two being Crime Scene Technicians, one being an Investigator in Training, another an Investigator III, and last the Commanding and Assistant Commanding Officers of the bureau. Of the information that was able to be obtained, they currently have ten open cases, one closed case, and twenty-one crime scene reports.

Some of the goals that the Sheriff's Investigations Bureau set and are on track with continuing were completing their first search warrant and filling up the bureau with all of the essential positions, which they filled and are continuing to fill. A goal for their future is to continue to expand the bureau despite all the essential positions filling up, there is still an active need for more qualified Crime Scene Technicians and Investigators.

The Sheriff’s Investigations Bureau has been a much-needed addition to the Sheriff's Department. Most, if not all deputies in the field would agree that the Investigators and Crime Scene Technicians have been hard at work helping close cases and placing the correct criminals behind bars. Overall we are very grateful for the addition of the Sheriff’s Investigations Bureau and all the work put into it.
